Phelps Street GatewayVeterans Writing Workshop
A community-centered creative writing workshop invites veterans to explore their experiences and creativity through writing. No previous writing experience is needed. With supportive activities such as shared readings, discussion, guided prompts, and optional opportunities to read aloud, participants can strengthen their craft, connect with other veterans, and use language for reflection, healing, and self-expression. This is a creative writing program and is not intended to provide mental health treatment or counseling. Sessions take place in person at LOOP Arts & Culture Center. The workshop is free and open to the public, and registration is required. The sessions are led by Sydney Stalnecker, a writer, teacher, and former journalist. She earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in English and a Teaching of Writing Certificate from Youngstown State University, where she continues to teach first-year writing as an adjunct instructor. Her reporting has appeared in The Jambar, where she served as Editor in Chief and Executive Producer in 2021 and 2022, and she occasionally shares her poetry at local open mic events. Lit Youngstown is a literary arts nonprofit that offers programs for writers, readers, and anyone who loves a good story.

AU Dance Co.Radical Release Yoga
Set aside 60 minutes for a floor-based yoga practice designed to ease stress, improve joint mobility, and loosen tight muscles. The session blends breathwork, somatic techniques, and yoga to help you notice what your body is holding and discover practical ways to release it. Expect a gentle approach that supports ongoing self care and fosters a more compassionate connection with both body and mind, with plenty of space for personal awareness. The class welcomes beginners and is inclusive of the broader community. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and water, and friends are welcome. This offering takes place on the first and third Tuesday of each month and is provided free by Honeycomb Arts and Wellness Collective. First Wednesday Reader Series brings together poet Becca J.R. Lachman of Athens, Ohio, poet Renée Nicholson of Morgantown, West Virginia, and fiction writer and essayist Rebecca Moon Ruark of Galesville, Maryland for a reading at Westside Bowl. Bella Davis co-hosts, and an open mic follows the featured readers. The event takes place in the Trophy Room downstairs, and the space can only be reached by stairs. ASL interpretation is provided by Meagan Albani. The series is supported by POP! Art Books Culture. Becca J.R. Lachman serves as the Poet Laureate of Athens, Ohio and as communications director for the Athens County Public Libraries. She holds an MFA from Bennington College, has authored four poetry collections, publishes choral music and hymn texts, and edited A Ritual to Read Together: Poems in Conversation with William Stafford. Her recent work has earned recognition from the Ohio Arts Council and the Black Mountain College Museum & Arts Center. Renée Nicholson has received grants, fellowships, and residencies from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, the West Virginia Humanities Council, the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, and Chateau d'Orquevaux. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University, and she is a seventh generation West Virginian based in Morgantown. A Northeast Ohio native, Rebecca Moon Ruark earned an MFA in Creative Writing with a fiction focus from Virginia Commonwealth University. She co-edited an anthology on dance and health for the Connective Tissue series from WVU Press and runs the Rust Belt Girl blog to spotlight writers from her home region. Before turning to the page, she grew up in the ballet studio. Upcoming readings in this series at Westside Bowl are set to feature Nancy Krygowski with Jane McCafferty, Diane Kendig with Erica Manto Paulson, William Breeze with E.F. Schraeder, and Theresa Gottl Brightman with Steve Brightman.

Jr Miss Italian, for ages 12 to 15, and Jr Princess, for ages 8 to 11, both include an evening gown presentation and a live onstage question. There is also an optional talent portion, and a separate Miss Talent title with its own crown and sash will be awarded, while talent scores do not impact overall pageant results. Meet outside the Public Library Main Branch near the bike rack for a community-paced outing connected to the Downtown Youngstown Farmers Market. On second Thursdays, both walkers and riders are welcome. Walkers set off on a 30 minute, one mile route through downtown that finishes at the market, while riders take a beginner-friendly 30 minute ride through downtown with guidance on safe road riding, using bike lanes, and signaling to other road users. On fourth Thursdays, the event focuses on walking only, featuring a 30 minute, one mile downtown loop that ends back at the market. The first 20 participants, whether walking or riding, receive a $5 certificate redeemable only at the Downtown Youngstown Night Market.

The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project animal complex in Warren, OH presents the first year of its Mutt Strut, a community dog walk where every shelter dog takes part. With around 120 dogs typically in care, sponsors and walkers are needed to ensure each pup is represented on the route. Each dog must have a sponsor. A sponsorship is $100 and can include up to four walkers. Sponsors are not required to walk, and the team will assign walkers if a sponsor cannot provide them. All participants are required to sign a waiver. Advance sponsorships and pre-registration are available prior to the event, and on-site registration is offered before the walk begins. Participants receive a Mutt Strut ’26 T-shirt, a participant number that matches their dog’s number, and a photo with the dog they walk. The course is 2.7 miles and starts and finishes at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project. It follows MLK, Front, Raiders Path, Haliday, Loveless, Union, and Victoria. Hydration stations for people and dogs are placed about every 0.7 miles. Volunteers will be positioned along the route and some will also walk designated dogs. Their debut full length, Horrors of Reality, arrived in early 2023 and showcased rapid, intricate riffing and commanding vocals. Building on relentless touring and a first record deal, they crafted Forbidden Morals, a concept album tracing a lost traveler’s fall into the castle of Vlad the Impaler, a dark and cinematic leap that solidified their profile and led to a partnership with Metal Blade Records. Listeners of Savatage, Metal Church, King Diamond, Annihilator, Testament, and Lääz Rockit will find plenty to latch onto. Phantom, the speed thrash outfit from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, was founded in 2021 by guitarist and vocalist J. C. García, also known as Necrohex. Drawing from traditional heavy metal, speed metal, deathrash, flashes of Latin rock, and even classic NES game soundtracks, the band pushed past early demos to release Handed to Execution in late 2023 and the Transylvanian Nightmare EP in 2024. Greg Hawkes, the keyboardist for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band The Cars, appears with the Boston group Eddie Japan for a performance dedicated to The Cars’ catalog. The set is curated by Hawkes and spans well known singles as well as lesser heard tracks, with additional selections connected to his broader career. A pioneer of synthesizer driven rock and pop, Hawkes helped shape the New Wave era and has also recorded and toured with Paul McCartney, Todd Rundgren, and The Turtles. This collaboration grew out of their work together on Eddie Japan’s 2017 album Golden Age and has been presented around the Northeast since 2019.

The fourth annual EMO-WEEN fundraiser for All About the Pawz Rescue brings a full night of emo energy to Westside Bowl. A shadowy circus cabaret unfolds in a theatrical spectacle where dark whimsy meets cutting-edge performance. This 90-minute immersive journey dives into a world of vampires, blending contemporary circus with dramatic storytelling. International artists bring theater, dance, and gymnastic prowess to the stage through contortion, juggling, acrobatics, and clowning, with moments of playful audience interaction. Music and eerie soundscapes pair with mesmerizing illusions to swing emotions from chills to laughter and wonder, highlighted by the wild antics of a graveyard clown. Inspired by the mystique of historic traveling carnivals and envisioned by creator Francisco Santos, a Cirque du Soleil veteran performer, the tale is set in 19th century Bohemia. Count Dracula launches a traveling circus with trusted guards as a covert means to move unnoticed, expand his reach, and transform humans into a legion of vampires. The experience invites spectators beyond the fourth wall, surrounding them with action until it feels as if the show is happening around them and, at times, within their midst. Expect a mysterious, fun, and dark production designed to astonish the senses.
