David S. Schaff Lecture: Healing Body and Soul

At First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, the David S. Schaff Lecture focuses on the healing of body and soul and features a keynote address by Dr. Esther Chung-Kim. The program begins with a gathering, continues with a dinner priced at $25, and concludes with a lecture. Dr. Chung-Kim explores how physicians in the early modern era, convinced that a divinely created cosmos held remedies for human illness, sometimes consulted the Bible for insights into medical practice. Accounts of cures in scripture were cited to support treatments and therapeutic approaches, and close reading offered both clinical observations and moral guidance. Drawing on research into medical writings from the sixteenth century, the talk shows how this body of knowledge served multiple purposes, including advice on prevention, all directed toward the work of healing.

Inextinguishable

A concert from the YSO honors deep roots and looks toward new horizons. Mussorgsky’s Dawn on the Moskva River opens the program, selected by Maestro Ochsner as a symbol of renewal and the start of a new season for the YSO. The exploration continues with Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s 2022 piece ARCHORA, a dive into elemental forces with textures that evolve and flow, underscoring the lasting vitality of orchestral music. The first half concludes with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, offering an upbeat wish for success in this next chapter. The program then reflects the Maestro’s Nordic heritage with Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, “The Inextinguishable.” Written amid the First World War, this life-affirming symphony champions the indomitable will to live. Rather than uncertainty, it offers a clear statement of the human spirit’s resilience and of music’s capacity to endure.

Oranssi Pazuzu / Wayfarer at the Westside Bowl

Westside Bowl hosts a powerful double bill as Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu teams with Denver’s Wayfarer for a night of boundary-pushing heavy music. Oranssi Pazuzu draw from Muuntautuja, a shape-shifting surge of warped rhythms, caustic textures, and alien-tinged electronics that twist their psychedelic black metal into new forms. Themes of transformation, mortality, and mass manipulation surface throughout, with pieces like Ikikäärme, Hautatuuli, Voitelu, and Bioalkemisti layering ritual pulses, dissonance, and immersive noise. Recent experiments with samplers and danceable beats lend a sinister, rave-like undertow to the maelstrom. Wayfarer brings the stark mood of the American West to black metal, colored by gothic country and Americana. With years of touring and five full-length records behind them, the band continues the American Gothic chapter that drew praise from outlets including Rolling Stone, Metal Hammer, and Decibel Magazine. Expect riff-laden laments that conjure dust, blood, and the weight of history. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the show.

Angela Perley/Country Honk at the Westside Bowl

At Westside Bowl, a roots-rich double bill brings Angela Perley together with Country Honk. Perley crafts road-ready songs that weave cosmic-leaning alt country, roadhouse rock and roll, a hint of psychedelia, and modern Americana. Her touring history includes opening for Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Tyler Childers, CAAMP, Kaitlin Butts, Eilen Jewell, and Jaime Wyatt, along with a set at Stagecoach in 2023 on Nikki Lane’s Horseshoe Stage. Country Honk is a Cleveland four piece steeped in honky tonk tradition with the drive of rock and roll. Influences range from Hank Williams, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard to Willie Nelson, echoing the country rock spirit of the 60s and 70s. Their shows blend original songs with deep-cut covers, and the group has built a loyal Midwest following while adding national festival appearances, including an official AmericanaFest showcase in Nashville.
