    Jerry's Middle Finger

Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside St, Portland · verified Jul 31
    See details

As part of the Days Between celebration, Jerry’s Middle Finger brings a faithful and communal tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band’s songbook to Crystal Ballroom in an all-ages setting. Formed in 2015 by Garrett Deloian, Rodney Newman, Son Vo, Jon Gold, Halina Janusz, and Lisa Malsberger, the group grew from early Los Angeles club shows to appearances at landmark rooms including Great American Music Hall, the Troubadour, The Ardmore, and Garcia’s at the Capitol Theatre. Their performances focus on the music Garcia made outside the Grateful Dead, weaving blues, reggae, Motown, gospel, and psychedelic rock into a set that changes from night to night. Favorites like Deal and Cats Under the Stars sit alongside deeper selections from Legions of Mary and collaborations with Merl Saunders, and arrangements can shift between eras with different approaches to songs such as Midnight Moonlight. Onstage, the band emphasizes feel and connection. Deloian’s guitar and vocals echo Garcia’s balance of structure and improvisation, Gold’s keys nod to Melvin Seals with touches that recall Keith Godchaux and Nicky Hopkins, and Janusz and Malsberger, known as the Ladyfingers, lift the music with rich, gospel-tinged harmonies. More than a cover act, they study tones, parts, and vocals to honor the originals while creating a shared experience with the crowd. The Days Between series is a nine-day salute to Jerry Garcia’s life, named for the Grateful Dead song and dedicated to the span between his birthday and the anniversary of his passing. All ages are welcome.
