    Sketches

    Wilkes-Barre · St. Stephen's Episcopal Church , 35 S Franklin St

At St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Wilkes-Barre, this chamber program explores how musical ideas take shape, from first impressions to fully realized works. Joaquín Turina evokes Seville with a loose, atmospheric touch in his Quartet in A minor for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 67. Johannes Brahms set his C minor piano quartet aside for twenty years before returning to complete it during a period of devotion to Clara Schumann. Alfred Schnittke fashions a companion piece from seventeen surviving bars penned by the sixteen-year-old Gustav Mahler, giving that youthful fragment a long-awaited conclusion. The program includes Turina’s Quartet in A minor for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 67, Schnittke’s Piano Quartet, Mahler’s Piano Quartet in A minor, and Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, performed by John Vaida on violin, Amy Iwazumi on viola, Bryan Hayslett on cello, and Bin Yu Sanford on piano. This event is supported in part by a grant from the armature and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
