    The Body w/ Big|Brave & Carnivorous Bells

    PhilaMOCA, 531 N 12th St, Philadelphia
    See details

A powerful bill at PhilaMOCA features The Body with BIG|BRAVE and Carnivorous Bells. The Body, the long-running duo of guitarist and vocalist Chip King with Lee Buford on percussion and electronics, is known for pushing heavy music into new directions through dramatic dynamics, unusual methods, and wide-ranging collaborations. Their album The Crying Out of Things gathers threads from across their catalog, blending ecstatic distortion, layered arrangements, and grooves drawn from hip hop and R&B, with contributions from Ben Eberle, Dan Blacksburg, and Felicia Chen. BIG|BRAVE brings a sound that moves between enormity and hushed detail. The trio’s in grief or in hope shifts toward dense, guitar-forward writing, with longtime touring bassist Liam Andrews joining Robin Wattie and Mathieu Ball in the studio to shape richly harmonized pieces tracked live. The songs fuse drone, electronic textures, and heaviness inside clear song forms, while lyrics dwell on grief and hope. Philadelphia’s Carnivorous Bells arrives with Beacons in Limbo, a set that channels their taut, controlled strain of aggression. Their tracks balance creeping unease with sudden outbursts, threading in skewed rhythms, flashes of piano and gleaming guitar, and vocals that veer from murmured lines to feverish intensity. Three singular approaches to boundary-pushing sound come together at PhilaMOCA.

During this PECO Family Jams program, participants create a garden ornament from salvaged materials, drawing on Simpson’s inventive approach. Learn more about his art and its presence at the Magic Gardens during tours of the mosaic-covered basement. Crafts and basement tours are included with regular admission, and the series is designed with families in mind.
