Known for blending deep soul and gospel roots with the energy of New York’s hip hop and jazz scenes, the pair brings a personal voice to these two towering legacies. Performing as JD Warren and The Rudiment, the husband and wife team formed the group in 2015 and released the album “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” in 2016 to high praise from outlets such as Jazz Times, Improvijazzation Nation, All About Jazz, AXS, and others. Their credits include stages like Blue Note NYC, Minton’s Harlem, Club Bonafide, and Cornelia St Café. The group has appeared at Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis, the Katy Jazz Festival where they also led masterclasses and workshops for students, and Jazz in the Park in Patterson, New Jersey across multiple years. They have also shared the Made in New York Gala stage with artists including Randy Brecker, Fransico Mela, and John Patituci. Drummer Jeremy Warren leads the composing and arranging, while vocalist Dermel Warren crafts the lyrics. Betty Carter earned a reputation, alongside Art Blakey, as a seminal mentor of young jazz artists and was celebrated for a fearless, highly original approach to vocal improvisation. Many musicians who came through her bands went on to lead their own, including Geri Allen, Stephen Scott, Don Braden, and Christian McBride. She launched Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead, a one to two week seminar developed with organizations such as the International Association for Jazz Education, 651 Arts, and the Kennedy Center, culminating in a final concert featuring students with instructors. She continued this work throughout her life and received the National Medal of Arts in 1997. Elvin Jones, a defining post-bop drummer, is best known for his role in John Coltrane’s quartet from late 1960 to late 1965, appearing on landmark recordings such as My Favorite Things, A Love Supreme, Ascension, and Live at Birdland. He later led his own trio and expanded ensembles under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. He occasionally recorded with his brothers, Hank and Thad Jones, both acclaimed musicians. Inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995, he is widely regarded, including by historian Ted Gioia, as one of the most influential drummers in jazz history.
