This edition of Strictly Jazz Entertainment’s Strictly Jazz series spotlights Chicago-based vocalist Michaelyn Oby in a program featuring the music of Dinah Washington. Oby’s style draws on the elegance of classic jazz while connecting with contemporary soul. A Milwaukee native and the daughter of musicians Michael and Joyce Oby, she moved to Memphis, began singing early, and earned the nickname “the little girl with the big voice.” She served as house vocalist for The Sax on Sunday Jazz Jam and was featured on WUMR 91.7’s Jazz Hot Spot. Weekly performances followed on historic Beale Street at The King’s Palace Café, noted as the only jazz dinner club on that strip. In 2019 she relocated to Chicago. Her experience also includes seasons as a featured guest entertainer aboard the American Queen Steamboat along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, plus two solo productions, “Feeling Good” and “Lady Sings Ms.Ross: A Tribute to Diana Ross.” The program centers on Dinah Washington, an American singer and pianist recognized as one of the most popular Black female recording artists of the 1950s. Known primarily for jazz while also performing blues, R&B, and traditional pop, she called herself the Queen of the Blues and was also known as the Queen of the Jukeboxes. Honors include induction into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
