The book traces how a single track reshaped the band’s legacy, following Touch of Grey from Robert Hunter’s early lyrics and the group’s initial live versions to the surge in mainstream attention that accompanied the song and the album In the Dark in 1987. Drawing on extensive archival work, Brackett explores the recording technologies, musical traits, audience listening practices, and industry strategies that helped turn a cult favorite into a pop culture fixture, including the creation of a hit single, an eye catching video, and a coordinated promotional effort. Brackett is the author of John Zorn: Tradition and Transgression and Live Dead: The Grateful Dead, Live Recordings, and the Ideology of Liveness, and he brings deep research experience to this look at a pivotal moment in rock history.
