Memphis RiverboatsOrion Financial Free Concert Series
The Orion Financial Free Concert Series brings a mix of local, national, and international artists to the historic Overton Park Shell, a landmark stage shaped by generations of standout performers. This installment features Deante’ Hitchcock, an Atlanta-bred emcee who centers love and vulnerability in his craft, channeling hip hop as a way to express honest emotion. His upcoming sophomore album, Once Upon A Time on ByStorm Entertainment and RCA Records, leans into melody and harmony across 16 tracks that trace the highs and lows of a relationship and the life-changing arrival of his son, Otto Saint Hitchcock. Built as a concept-driven journey influenced by narrative albums and R&B-tinged vocal approaches, the project involves collaborators Arsenio Archer, SlimWav, and Brandon Phillips-Taylor to shape a transparent, layered arc about commitment, growth, and the feelings men often leave unspoken. Songs like Time of Their Lives set an ethereal, coming-of-age tone, Whoa! captures carefree days giving way to unexpected connection, and Zodiac featuring Shamba explores learning one another. The acoustic-leaning Alone wrestles with hesitation, while 2 Special featuring David Fuller, U Were Right I Was Wrong, and Callin’ featuring Big K.R.I.T. and Westside Boogie move toward acceptance. The closing track, May 26 featuring Samoht, reflects on the moment he learned he would become a father. Hitchcock kept momentum through the shutdown period with releases like BETTER, Live from Quarantine, and the Valentine’s Day-themed EP Everyday the 14th, following earlier mixtapes and a growing profile that included viral freestyles, an EP with Childish Major, and a Grammy-nominated contribution to Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers III. He has earned cosigns from notable peers and has opened for a wide range of artists, underscoring his versatility and charisma. Beyond music, he launched The Mother God Project to support women entrepreneurs in partnership with ACE’s Women’s Business Center, providing LLC registration and training that has already helped dozens start their own businesses. This session continues the scroll and welcomes both returning participants and first-timers. No artistic experience is required. Contribute by drawing, writing, annotating, telling a story, or simply spending time with others who know how a single form can turn into a recurring character in a family’s story. LAWRENCE WELLS: BACKSTORY
An event with author Lawrence Wells celebrates the release of Backstory: A Literary Life on the Run, a collection of behind the scenes adventures from cross country magazine assignments he shared with Dean Faulkner Wells. The pieces explore how unexpected moments shaped their reporting, opening with Dean’s conversation with Willie “Suicide” Jones, the wing walker who flew with her father, and closing with her childhood memories of a Christmas at Rowan Oak, the home of her uncle William Faulkner. Along the way the two visit Wounded Knee, where Dean leaves a lock of hair in a gesture of kinship, spend an evening in Little Rock with authors Charles Portis and Dee Brown, talk jazz in San Francisco with Wild Mango and singer guitarist Joyce Cooling, trace the Santa Fe Trail, and take in Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo. Candid personal scenes appear throughout, from a reception for Budd Schulberg in Montauk and dinner at Lee Krasner’s home, to a Long Island party where Lauren Bacall jokes about Dean’s voice, to a Louisiana swamp where an alligator rests near Larry’s feet, and even a tense moment in Las Vegas brought on by slot machines. Taken together, the stories sketch a marriage of mind and spirit. Dean Faulkner Wells, William Faulkner’s niece and former ward, studied at the University of Mississippi and the University of Geneva. Her work includes The Ghosts of Rowan Oak, editing The New Great American Writers’ Cookbook and The Best of Bad Faulkner, the memoir Every Day by the Sun, and articles for The Paris Review, Parade, Ladies’ Home Journal, Southern Living, and more. Lawrence Wells has edited William Faulkner: The Cofield Collection by Jack Cofield and RIOT: Witness to Anger and Change by Ed Meek, written the novels Rommel and the Rebel, Let the Band Play Dixie, and Fair Youth, scripted the Emmy winning PBS documentary Return to the River narrated by James Earl Jones, contributed frequently to the New York Times Syndicate, and authored the memoirs In Faulkner’s Shadow and Ghostwriter for University Press of Mississippi.
