Freedom Middle Honors Tony Kemp with Plaque Unveiling
Freedom Middle School hosts a ceremony at its baseball and softball complex to unveil a bronze plaque honoring Franklin native and Major League Baseball veteran Tony Kemp. The tribute recognizes his path from Freedom Middle student to professional athlete while celebrating his accomplishments in sports, dedication to academics, leadership, and integrity. The ceremony is open to students, families, staff, and the public. Kemp’s story includes standout seasons at Vanderbilt University, where he was a consensus All-American and the 2013 SEC Player of the Year, followed by induction into the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame with the 2025 class. Drafted by the Houston Astros in 2013, he reached the majors in 2016, contributed to the Astros’ 2017 World Series championship, and has also played for the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics. He is known for versatility, work ethic, and leadership, along with efforts that support environmental sustainability, global health, and opportunities for youth. His “+1 Effect” encourages simple actions that create positive change. The bronze plaque will remain a permanent fixture at the athletic complex, honoring Kemp’s legacy and offering everyday inspiration rooted in hard work, strong character, and striving for excellence.
