Over the course of two hours, the group will explore the river at dusk and after dark, look for distinctive plants and animals, note interesting rock formations, and learn about the night sky. Kayaks, personal flotation devices, and headlamps are provided. Participants may bring their own PFD, paddle, or headlamp, but personal kayaks are not allowed. Wear weather appropriate clothing, bring water, and be prepared for changing conditions. This program is designed for ages 14 and older, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The group meets at the boat dock at Ijams River Landing. Please park only at Ijams River Landing, not at Meads Quarry or the main Visitor Center. Vehicle access is via the gravel road located between the main Visitor Center and Meads Quarry, which leads to parking at the end. Parking is free for participants. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to pick up a parking pass at check in at Ijams River Landing. Those with an annual parking pass or membership are already covered. A liability release is required once per calendar year before participating, and those who have already completed it for another Ijams Education program this year do not need to fill it out again. The kayak launch and dock include features that assist guests with mobility or access needs, though they do not fully meet ADA standards. If accommodations are needed, contact the public programs team in advance to discuss options before purchasing tickets. No walk ins will be accepted and a ticket is required for each participant. Full refunds are available up to seven days in advance or if the program is canceled due to inclement weather. Fees of five dollars or less are nonrefundable, and tickets are not transferable.
