Nate Powell appears to celebrate the release of Diana: The Punk Singer Who Ripped Through Time, a new graphic novel centered on Diana Bogue, a runaway from a small Arkansas town whose platinum hair, voice, and presence electrify a tight-knit punk scene. His work has earned Eisner and Ignatz honors, ALA and YALSA distinctions, the Comic-Con International Inkpot Award, the Jack and Roz Kirby Award for Independence, the CXC Transformative Work Award, and recognition as a two-time finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

The performance also highlights a leadership transition, with Dr. Jonathan Schallert stepping into the role of permanent conductor following the 25-year tenure of Dr. Ronald F. Vernon, after previously leading the orchestra for select works. In May, students 18 and younger from Shelby, Tipton, and Fayette counties competed for the orchestra’s Dr. Ronald F. Vernon Scholarship and Concerto Competition, and four soloists were selected to appear with the ensemble. Sophia Vo performs the Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22 by Saint-Saënz. Ashton Carter plays the first movement of Walton’s Viola Concerto. Levi Lei performs the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Saint-Saënz. Myles Martin plays Stamitz’s Viola Concerto in D major, Op. 1.

    Robert Ellis

    Hernando's Hide-A-Way, 3210 Hernando St, Memphis · verified Oct 9
    See details

Robert Ellis highlights the spare beauty of Yesterday’s News, a new collection captured straight to tape over two days with only nylon string guitar, upright bass, and subtle handheld percussion. The songs lean into rich harmony, alternate tunings, and intricate fingerstyle touches drawn from English folk influences, while his delicate tenor and restrained delivery evoke the aching warmth of Chet Baker and the graceful interplay of Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Following the high energy of Texas Piano Man, Ellis continues his habit of surprising turns, threading influences from Paul Simon, John Prine, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell across five solo records and earning praise from major outlets for daring musicianship and vivid storytelling. Yesterday’s News is his first LP on Niles City Records, tied to the Fort Worth studio he operates with longtime collaborator Josh Block. Alicia Blue also appears, bringing songs shaped by a life between Southern California and South Texas, where mariachi at home, West Coast soul in her headphones, and years of poetry eventually became music after encouragement from an elder soul singer. Her early track Magma was featured on Starbucks’ flagship Spotify playlist and heard in stores worldwide, momentum that led from the Los Angeles songwriter scene to a move to Nashville. Recent work includes the duet Tennessee with Lucinda Williams, and her evolving sound leans into classic country colored by the mariachi melodies of her upbringing. She is preparing a debut country album with Shooter Jennings, who has been a vocal supporter of her voice. This is an all ages event with $20 admission.

SHEREE RENEE THOMAS W/ ROBERT GORDON: THE TONGUE I DREAM IN

387 Perkins Ext, Memphis · verified Oct 11
    See details

Author Sheree Renée Thomas sits down with Robert Gordon for a conversation marking the release of her new book, The Tongue I Dream In. The collection gathers poems, stories, and essays that move between the intimate and the expansive, engaging Black folklore, dominant white mythmaking, reflections on our place in time, and the pull of possible futures. Those futures shimmer with starships and floods, dancers reflected in crystal caverns, and harvests that reckon with past wrongs. The talk delves into how Thomas brings poetry and activism together in her creative practice. Thomas is a multiple award winning author, poet, and editor who curated the World Fantasy Award honored Dark Matter 1 and 2 and was the first to bring W. E. B. Du Bois’s science fiction to readers of speculative work. She serves as associate editor at Obsidian: Literature & the Arts in the African Diaspora and as senior editor at The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and she lives in Memphis, Tennessee. Her conversation partner, Robert Gordon, is a writer who has won a Grammy and a filmmaker who has won an Emmy, with films including Best of Enemies and William Eggleston’s Stranded in Canton and books including It Came From Memphis and Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion.
