    Caroline Davis: Solo

The Green Room, 1350 Concourse Ave, Memphis · verified Oct 2
    See details

Caroline Davis offers an intimate solo performance that probes the possibilities of interactive technologies, shaping saxophone timbres she regards as distinctive and a bit offbeat. The set unfolds spontaneously in response to the space and the people in it. Her sound world leans on Pure Data patches from the Organelle’s open source community, including work by the technobear, shreeswifty, critterandguitari, tony j morton, nobuyasu sakonda, soxsa, varicela, nicky-system, samesimilar, and chrisk. Music will be drawn from Fallows, her recent solo album created during a quiet period on land in Ucross, Wyoming. Throughout, ideas associated with bell hooks shape the approach, such as practicing freedom through love, embracing radical openness, sustaining commitment, using community as a route to escape, trusting in one’s capacity to transform, listening with intention, and rejecting the urge to erase or exclude.

416 S Grove Park Rd, Memphis · verified Oct 4
    See details

Nate Powell appears to celebrate the release of Diana: The Punk Singer Who Ripped Through Time, a new graphic novel centered on Diana Bogue, a runaway from a small Arkansas town whose platinum hair, voice, and presence electrify a tight-knit punk scene. Beneath her commanding persona, she contends with scars from a strict religious upbringing and confides only in a distant pen pal, until his sudden silence upends her world. Fiercely protective and untethered, Diana blends music with homegrown magic in a desperate attempt to bend reality to her will. The story pairs raw coming-of-age intensity with time-twisting stakes as it follows the friends drawn into Diana’s orbit. Powell, a National Book Award recipient, is the cartoonist behind Fall Through, Save It For Later, Come Again, civil rights leader John Lewis’s March trilogy, and Lies My Teacher Told Me. His work has earned Eisner and Ignatz honors, ALA and YALSA distinctions, the Comic-Con International Inkpot Award, the Jack and Roz Kirby Award for Independence, the CXC Transformative Work Award, and recognition as a two-time finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

    Robert Ellis

    Hernando's Hide-A-Way, 3210 Hernando St, Memphis · verified Oct 4
    See details

Robert Ellis highlights the spare beauty of Yesterday’s News, a new collection captured straight to tape over two days with only nylon string guitar, upright bass, and subtle handheld percussion. The songs lean into rich harmony, alternate tunings, and intricate fingerstyle touches drawn from English folk influences, while his delicate tenor and restrained delivery evoke the aching warmth of Chet Baker and the graceful interplay of Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Following the high energy of Texas Piano Man, Ellis continues his habit of surprising turns, threading influences from Paul Simon, John Prine, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell across five solo records and earning praise from major outlets for daring musicianship and vivid storytelling. Yesterday’s News is his first LP on Niles City Records, tied to the Fort Worth studio he operates with longtime collaborator Josh Block. Alicia Blue also appears, bringing songs shaped by a life between Southern California and South Texas, where mariachi at home, West Coast soul in her headphones, and years of poetry eventually became music after encouragement from an elder soul singer. Her early track Magma was featured on Starbucks’ flagship Spotify playlist and heard in stores worldwide, momentum that led from the Los Angeles songwriter scene to a move to Nashville. Recent work includes the duet Tennessee with Lucinda Williams, and her evolving sound leans into classic country colored by the mariachi melodies of her upbringing. She is preparing a debut country album with Shooter Jennings, who has been a vocal supporter of her voice. This is an all ages event with $20 admission.

Strictly Jazz: The Music of Betty Carter and Elvin Jones

The Green Room at Crosstown Arts, 1350 Concourse Ave, Memphis · verified Oct 4
    See details

This installment of Strictly Jazz Entertainment’s series spotlights NYC-based duo Jeremy and Dermel Warren as they explore the music of vocalist Betty Carter and drummer Elvin Jones. Known for blending deep soul and gospel roots with the energy of New York’s hip hop and jazz scenes, the pair brings a personal voice to these two towering legacies. Performing as JD Warren and The Rudiment, the husband and wife team formed the group in 2015 and released the album “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” in 2016 to high praise from outlets such as Jazz Times, Improvijazzation Nation, All About Jazz, AXS, and others. Their credits include stages like Blue Note NYC, Minton’s Harlem, Club Bonafide, and Cornelia St Café. The group has appeared at Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis, the Katy Jazz Festival where they also led masterclasses and workshops for students, and Jazz in the Park in Patterson, New Jersey across multiple years. They have also shared the Made in New York Gala stage with artists including Randy Brecker, Fransico Mela, and John Patituci. Drummer Jeremy Warren leads the composing and arranging, while vocalist Dermel Warren crafts the lyrics. Betty Carter earned a reputation, alongside Art Blakey, as a seminal mentor of young jazz artists and was celebrated for a fearless, highly original approach to vocal improvisation. Many musicians who came through her bands went on to lead their own, including Geri Allen, Stephen Scott, Don Braden, and Christian McBride. She launched Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead, a one to two week seminar developed with organizations such as the International Association for Jazz Education, 651 Arts, and the Kennedy Center, culminating in a final concert featuring students with instructors. She continued this work throughout her life and received the National Medal of Arts in 1997. Elvin Jones, a defining post-bop drummer, is best known for his role in John Coltrane’s quartet from late 1960 to late 1965, appearing on landmark recordings such as My Favorite Things, A Love Supreme, Ascension, and Live at Birdland. He later led his own trio and expanded ensembles under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. He occasionally recorded with his brothers, Hank and Thad Jones, both acclaimed musicians. Inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995, he is widely regarded, including by historian Ted Gioia, as one of the most influential drummers in jazz history.
