Potato Gumbo

The Players Theatre Company presents Potato Gumbo by Jean Ciampi, produced by special arrangement with Next Stage Press, LLC. This stage comedy-drama explores aging, family, and autonomy through the story of Gretchen and Thomas. A longed-for recipe at the New Orleans School of Cooking pulls them into playful plans that escalate into an impromptu road trip and a return with a police escort. Alongside a diagnosis and a pair of dubiously acquired handcuffs, their adult children grapple with how to support their parents while also setting limits. The narrative blends humor with hard questions about whether Gretchen’s spur-of-the-moment choices hint at deeper concerns and how much a weary heart can carry. Sponsored by Acme Consulting. Funded in part by the City of Conroe Arts & Culture Grant, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The Midnight Library Discussion

A small choice can redirect a life. This free, guided conversation focuses on The Midnight Library and its exploration of regret, second chances, and the quiet courage it takes to keep going. In a warm and supportive setting, participants reflect on the pull of what if, the connection between regret, identity, and purpose, and how to make peace with the life they are living. The discussion is facilitated by Happy Camper Counselor, Sherrie, and is intended to be safe, compassionate, and judgment free. Finishing the book is not required, and those who are simply curious are welcome. Content note: the book includes themes of depression, suicidal thoughts, and emotional distress, so attendees are encouraged to care for themselves and participate only if it feels supportive. Potato Gumbo

Jean Ciampi’s stage play blends warmth and irreverence while confronting the realities of aging and the shifting roles within a family. Gretchen entices Thomas with a culinary dream tied to the New Orleans School of Cooking, setting off plans that lead to a spur-of-the-moment road trip, a pair of stolen handcuffs, a police-escorted return, and a diagnosis that changes the conversation. Their grown children wrestle with how to protect the people who raised them without taking over, as questions arise about memory, the limits of a tired heart, and where care crosses into control. This production is presented through a special arrangement with Next Stage Press, LLC. Support comes from Acme Consulting, along with partial funding from the City of Conroe Arts & Culture Grant, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Boaters are encouraged to plan a sober captain ahead of time. A helpful launch option is Scott’s Ridge Public Boat Ramp, which is close to the cove and can reduce long navigation at night. Before launching, check that navigation and anchor lights work, the horn functions, there are enough life vests for everyone on board, and a throwable is within reach. Sponsorships are already lined up, with a few opportunities still available for local businesses. More details will be announced.
