2026 Build-A-Bed Initiative Volunteer Days

United Way of Northern Cameron & Willacy Counties is organizing a hands-on Build-A-Bed Initiative where volunteers will help assemble beds for children in the community. No prior experience is required, and individuals, families, student groups, business teams, and community members are all welcome. Opportunities are available at both the Cameron County Schools Build Day and the Willacy County Schools Build Day, and participants may take part in one or both. World Birding Center Birding Tour

This two-hour birding tour welcomes all ages and experience levels. Participants search the park for as many species as possible, with a focus on about 30 Valley Specialties. More than 365 species have been recorded here, including many seen only in the Rio Grande Valley, so the outing suits both newcomers and seasoned birders. The route often features the renowned birding deck overlooking wetlands, a vantage point with a single-day record of 115 species, as well as the Tropical Area, where Green Jays, Great Kiskadees, and Clay-colored Thrushes are regulars and rarities like Elegant Trogon, Rose-throated Becard, White-throated Thrush, and Crimson-collared Grosbeak have appeared. If conditions are very warm and humid, and group size and weather allow, a quiet electric tram may be used to tour the park. Participation is included with park admission, which is $5 for adults and free for children. Family-friendly and open to all skill levels. No pets. Meet on the deck just outside the Visitor Center Park Store. Free loaner binoculars are available.

Participants may complete all 108 or move at a personal rhythm, with attention on intention, connection, and the transformative energy of the solstice. A Bible Bookmark & Knotted Rosary Workshop

Arts & Prayers offers a calm, hands-on workshop that blends creative expression with faith. Participants will craft a Bible bookmark from brocade ribbon and learn the techniques for making a knotted rosary with glass pearl beads while exploring the history and traditions of prayer in the Catholic faith. Each person receives materials for one bookmark and a rosary project, a copy of An Introduction to Prayer by Bishop Robert Barron, and refreshments including tea, coffee, fresh fruit, and croissants. The rosary component is more advanced and calls for patience, dexterity, and fine motor skills, so completion times may vary. The cost is $35 per person. Space is limited, and if the workshop fills a waiting list will be created. Once five people are on the list, an additional class will be offered.

This event simulates the demands of HYROX-style fitness racing, with alternating running and functional workout stations. A welcoming meet and greet introduces Dr. José Luis Lozano Garcia, the newest Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist at South Heart Clinic. A ranger-led tour welcomes all ages and experience levels to explore the park and search for butterflies and dragonflies, including species unique to South Texas and, in some cases, found in the United States only there. More than 300 butterflies and 100 dragonflies occur in the Valley, and a knowledgeable ranger will help point them out. If it is too hot, a tram will be available to get around the park. Cameras and binoculars are optional, and loaner binoculars can be provided. The tour meets on the deck outside the Park Store. It is free with park entry, which is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Butterfly tours have been held every Friday for the nineteen years Estero has been in existence, welcoming locals and visitors from around the world.

National Trails Day MTB Ride - Harlingen Arroyo Trails

This ride has been rescheduled after recent rains left the trails too muddy. The route explores the Harlingen Arroyo Trails at Arroyo Park MTB Trails, a connected network of primitive off-road paths that connect with a paved hike and bike trail. Expect a no-drop group ride of about 10 miles with separate groups organized by rider ability, covering flowy singletrack along with technical climbs and descents, plus paved sections for variety. The trails are built and maintained by the City of Harlingen Parks and Recreation Department and the Valley Off-Road Bicycling Association, an IMBA local chapter.

Gundam: G-GENERATION ST10&EB01 Battle Royale Release Event

Celebrate the launch of Starter Deck ST10 and Booster Pack EB01 from the G GENERATION series with a multiplayer Battle Royale designed to showcase the connection between G GENERATION and group play. The recommended structure is a single round with four players at each table, with three player tables used if needed. Players are assigned different team colors at each table before the battles begin. The top finisher at every table earns a winner prize. After each match, participants vote to recognize a Most Valuable Pilot for positive contributions such as helping newer players or fostering an engaging atmosphere, and each MVP receives a prize. Team results across all tables are then tallied to determine an overall winning team that receives a team prize, with ties settled by options like an extra game, rock paper scissors, a raffle, or a dice roll. Event entry can follow one of two formats, either one Starter Deck with four Booster Packs or one Starter Deck only. After the official matches, stores and players may continue playing if they wish.

Paranormal Stories of the RGV

Whispers and wonders from the Rio Grande Valley take center stage in a live paranormal storytelling gathering. Connections RGV partners with special host Karla of Karlafindsghosts to spotlight local guests as they recount true encounters with the unknown. Expect firsthand tales of ghosts, haunted places, uncanny happenings, family lore, and other mysteries that still circulate through neighborhoods and along familiar roads. Organizers are currently seeking eight participants willing to share their stories before an audience as part of a panel.

100 Year Anniversary 1K / 5K Run

Celebrate the Rio Grande Council’s 100th year with a community run at Harlon Block Sports Complex. Participants can choose a 1 mile option for $20 or a 5K for $35. The 1 mile is untimed and provides a custom finisher medal to registered participants who cross the finish line wearing the current year event bib. The 5K is chip timed, includes a custom finisher medal for bibbed finishers, and offers age group awards based on chip time. A free event T-shirt is included with registrations completed before the published cutoff. Packet pickup will be offered prior to the event, with the location to be announced. The event will be held rain or shine. Refunds are not issued for participants who skip packet pickup or choose not to attend, and any packets left unclaimed at pickup are considered abandoned.

Celebrate a century of Scouting in the Rio Grande Council with a Community Scouting Showcase and a 1-mile fun run at Harlon Block Sports Complex. Families and youth can dive into hands-on skills that define the program, including building a fire, pitching a tent, first aid demonstrations, knot tying, and pioneering. Try archery, race a Pinewood Derby car, sail in a Raingutter Regatta, and test a Derby Space Racer, along with other activities for all ages. It welcomes current Scout families, alumni and former members, as well as anyone curious about Scouting. The fun run honors one hundred years of leadership, service, adventure, and shared memories. Scouts and units are encouraged to wear their shirts and represent their Pack, Troop, Crew, or Post.

The session is led by a retired Registered Nurse with 43 years of experience who uses noninvasive muscle testing grounded in kinesiology to help identify underlying health concerns. The instructor completed advanced training through Ulan Nutritional Systems in Nutrition Response Testing and is a Certified Reflexologist, having finished a 200-hour program at the International Institute of Reflexology in 2013. The event brings together community leaders, advocates, donors, foster families, and friends to support efforts that prevent child abuse and strengthen foster and kinship care across South Texas. Guest speaker Denise S. Barrera, MSSW, LCPAA, CPS Regional Director for Region 11, will share experience and perspective on child welfare, foster care, and practical ways the community can create lasting change for children. For more than three decades, Blue Sunday has worked to raise awareness, equip churches, support foster and kinship families, and offer hope to abused and neglected children throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
