The Trinity River Challenge offers two race distances, 6 miles and 12 miles, with same day registration available and a pre-race briefing to follow. Entry fees for these distances are per paddler, set at $10 for ages 1 to 17 and $35 for ages 18 and up. Divisions for both distances include Canoe Solo, Canoe Tandem, Kayak Solo, Kayak Tandem, stand up paddleboard, Unlimited Solo, and Unlimited Tandem, and surf skis are placed in the Unlimited class. The 6 mile route features a buoy turn partway through before returning to a buoy finish, and the 12 mile route follows the same format over a longer stretch. A separate two mile youth segment is free for participants 17 and under; ages 12 to 17 may compete solo or tandem, while those 11 and younger must be with an adult. OC1 participation is at each paddler’s own risk, so knowing the course is important due to possible rudder damage. Event rules include no alcoholic beverages at the launch site or on the course, required US Coast Guard approved life jackets in the boat for everyone on board, and compliance with all state and local laws. Portaging along the riverbanks is permitted only when the waterway does not provide a navigable path. Canoe classes must use single blade paddles, kayak paddles are not allowed in canoe divisions, rudders are prohibited in canoe classes, and race numbers will be affixed on the left side of the boat.
