Summer Bug Safari
Explore the prairie with a ranger and discover hands-on ways to collect insects while learning how bugs support life on land by pollinating flowers, feeding other animals, and maintaining healthy soil. A ranger will lead a guided bug hunt through Penn Farm, offering a look at how scientists study arthropods in the field. The group gathers at the parking lot at Penn Farm. Bring water and a snack if needed, wear sturdy walking shoes, and dress for the weather. Program details may change, be postponed, or be canceled due to weather, and updates may be shared on the organizer’s Facebook story. There is no additional program fee. Park entry is $7 per person or free with a Texas State Parks Pass, and children 12 and under enter the park at no charge.

Enjoy a full day of swim, bike, and run with options for young athletes and a special category for pairs. Kids ages 6 to 15 can choose a traditional triathlon or a splash and dash, with junior and senior course lengths to match their age group. The family and friends wave features a 200 meter pool swim, a 5 mile bike ride, and a 2K run. It welcomes any two people who want to participate together, regardless of age or gender, whether that is an adult with a child, two children, or two adults. Each person signs up for the Family Wave and includes a group name. Partners receive matching race numbers, begin the swim together in a time trial start, and can complete the course side by side. Participants in this wave receive the same perks such as a shirt, a medal, and official timing. This category is recreational and does not count toward age group awards.

Professor Salvia leads a kid friendly adventure into how native plants support birds, combining Audubon’s Plants for Birds with the Junior Master Gardener plant curriculum.
