Hunter Education Course

Geared toward new or younger hunters age 9 and older, this Hunter Education Classroom Course focuses on firearm and hunting safety, ethical practices, and wildlife conservation. All course materials are supplied. Classroom instruction lasts up to six hours, not including time for check in, breaks, the exam, or distributing certification cards. Certified volunteer instructors lead these classes throughout the year. Advance registration is required. Certification costs $15, and some instructors may add range or facility fees. Confirm with the instructor that you are enrolling in the Classroom Course, and ask for directions and any special instructions before attending. At the class, pay the fee to the instructor, participate in the full session, and complete the written test. A score of at least 75 percent is needed to pass. After you successfully finish, the instructor may issue a temporary certification card. With a valid Texas hunting license and the temporary card, you are allowed to hunt in Texas. In Salado, TX, this ALIVE! introductory pistol course concentrates on accessing and cornering fundamentals through realistic, scenario-driven training with airsoft pistols. Led by Steve Miles, the program focuses on the fighting side of armed self defense, beginning with guided exercises that place participants in situations like countering a knife assault, responding to a rapid close range gun encounter, addressing multiple attackers, maneuvering in and around cover, and making decisions during a simulated bank robbery intervention. Instruction emphasizes evaluating choices and outcomes, with individualized feedback on technique, gear selection, and how equipment is positioned. The latter portion of the training builds core skills with drills on drawing from concealment, shooting with one hand, alternative sighting approaches, moving while shooting, and applying tactics from cover. Developed by Jim Masterson and shared with owners, trainers, and therapists around the world, these techniques offer a practical path to clearer communication and a stronger horse and human connection. A former student described it as a way to connect with a horse on a deeper level. Participants are expected to meet the prerequisite by completing either the book or the DVD beforehand. The course is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork for continuing education credits. Tuition is $545.

2026 Fall Swap Meet | Temple

The ALPCA Lone Star Region welcomes current members from across Texas and beyond, along with their guests and prospective members, for its Fall Swap Meet at the Temple Public Library in the Gladys Blaylock McLane Room on the third floor. The room is ADA compliant and reached by a staircase or two elevators. It is a bit of a walk from parking, so bringing a dolly or cart for move in and out is recommended. Access begins when the library opens, and attendees arriving right at opening may be asked to help set up tables. Complimentary coffee and doughnuts will be available when doors open. All displays must be free standing or able to lean against the walls, since nothing may be attached to the walls. Lunch will be provided at no cost to attendees. After lunch, a brief business meeting will include the annual review of Region positions (President, Treasurer and Sergeant-at-Arms) and awards, followed by a donation auction. Those interested in standing for elected Region positions or wishing to have their vote counted for the 2026 term should plan to attend this meet. Donations are encouraged at the event or in advance; for advance donations, contact Jim Palmer (#1779), Treasurer, at treas@alpcalonestar.org. Awards will recognize Best of Show for a display of two or more different plates, Best Plate for a single item or pair, and Long Distance. The room must be vacated and cleaned promptly at the end of the event. This sanctioned meet is not open to the general public. Admission is $10 for ALPCA members, which includes use of a first table, and $10 for prospective members. Family members of both members and prospective members are admitted at no charge. Additional tables for members are $10 each, with no advance reservations required. Parking for library guests is free and plentiful in both a surface lot and a covered lot at the plaza that houses the library. Enter through the main lobby, then use the elevators or stairwell to the third floor and follow interior signage to the McLane Room at the end of the hallway. Lodging is readily available around Temple, including many national chains, with numerous options along Interstate 35 near exits 301 and 302. Temple is a city of about 82,000 along Interstate 35, situated roughly south of Waco and north of Austin.
