    Oar - Expressive Writing Lab

    Killeen Creators, 701 N 10th St, Killeen · verified Sep 4
    See details

Operation Art of Recovery brings artists and members of the military community together to use creativity as a tool for healthy distraction, transformative healing, and a better quality of life. Its Expressive Writing Lab is designed to build inner peace and resilience through therapeutic writing and supportive connections. The emphasis is on meaningful, enjoyable time and growing personal recovery capital, and strong pieces of writing and performance often take shape along the way. Sessions are led by award-winning spoken word artist Richard “Shake the Poet” White and Killeen Creators founder and executive director Kristin “Momma Kay” Wright, both of whom have relied on writing and performance throughout their own recovery journeys. Richard is a veteran, martial arts instructor, poet, published author, and award-winning slam poet in recovery from trauma and substance misuse. Writing, poetry, and performing have helped him process both childhood and service-related trauma, and teaching allows him to reach others on similar paths. Kristin is a survivor of child and domestic abuse in mental health and addiction recovery who has written poetry and plays since middle school, with several of her plays produced at colleges and universities across the country. Words gave her a way to move beyond circumstances she could not control when she was younger, and she has reshaped her personal story over time. Each lab follows a consistent rhythm that includes reviewing safe space guidelines, a brief icebreaker, an introduction to the day’s prompt, time to write, optional sharing with optional feedback, an open mic, and a thoughtful wrap-up. Writers and poets from the broader community are welcome, including those without military ties, because creating and healing are for everyone. In-person attendance is encouraged, and participation via Zoom is also available. If arriving after the start, please enter quietly to keep the session flowing. Snacks and water may be provided when donated and available.
