Local children shared drawings of their favorite summer memories with the Armory Gallery, and those images have been woven together into a paint-by-number mural on canvas. Community members of all ages are welcome to add their brushstrokes during DBI’s 2026 Summer Solstice Festival, contributing to a collaborative artwork that celebrates summertime stories. After the festival, the completed mural will be exhibited at the Armory Gallery alongside the original children's drawings. At Glade Road Growing, kids ages 8 to 12 take part in a hands-on farm-to-table cooking camp led by educator and counselor Scarlett Williams. Campers trace ingredients back to their roots by exploring soil, seeds, plants, and animals on a working farm, then harvest what is in season. After time in the field they wash up and head to the kitchen to turn the day’s bounty into fresh dishes. Along the way they practice teamwork, build social confidence, expand their palates, and deepen their connection to the outdoors. Registration is required, fills quickly, and is non-refundable. A liability and media release will be completed at check-in. Please send two snacks and a water bottle, and dress children for changing weather with sun or rain protection and layers. Long pants and closed-toe shoes that can handle a muddy barnyard are important. Families will receive additional details by email before camp, and you can include your child’s name, age, and any allergies or medical needs during registration. Past participants have enjoyed trying new foods and time with the farm animals. The camp is guided by Scarlett Williams, a New River Valley native with over two decades of experience supporting children as an outdoor educator, science teacher, and elementary school counselor, now a licensed professional counselor who holds National Board Certification as a School Counselor and has long connected schools and families with local farms. Under Virginia law, participants in agritourism activities assume the inherent risks associated with land, equipment, and animals, and the location is not liable for injury or death that results from those inherent risks, including situations where a participant’s own negligence contributes.

The workshop highlights social dance traditions where the music supports the dancers and every step carries meaning. Participants can try beginner flatfooting on the floor or simply settle in and enjoy the traditional rhythms that link fiddle and banjo to the movement. The program welcomes all ages and those with no prior experience. There is no cost to attend, but advance registration is required, and you may register either to dance or to observe. Gina and Jason Dilg bring rhythm-driven dance tunes and heartfelt country ballads from the American string band tradition to Blacksburg’s Market Square Jam. Based in Radford near Lovely Mount in Southwest Virginia, the duo lives and breathes this music through performance, dance, art, and teaching. Gina grew up in a family of musicians and has played Southern Appalachian music since childhood; she is a musician, dancer, and graphic artist who teaches fiddling and flatfoot dance. Jason is a widely respected interpreter of Appalachian dance tunes and ballads, a versatile multi-instrumentalist with a record of competition honors, a former adjunct banjo instructor at Naropa University, and the current instructor and director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians program in Montgomery County, Virginia. Together, they were recently featured in the PBS docuseries Life in Virginia’s Appalachia: Flatfooting. The Market Square Jam is an official venue affiliated with The Crooked Road, held at Market Square Park, and it focuses on traditional Old Time music while welcoming musicians to trade tunes, enjoy time with friends and family, and take in the atmosphere of downtown Blacksburg.

Summer Arts Festival Presents Solacoustix
Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg’s Summer Arts Festival presents a free concert with Solacoustix. The band ranges across blues, R&B, country, and rock. Bandleader JoJo Stockton switches between bass and lead, while singer Stuart Brown blends current and classic songs into his own style. A performance by the Miller Holler Band kicks off August. Admission is $5, and children 6 and under are admitted free. Food, drinks, and adult beverages will be available for purchase. Dance Bootcamp Ages 13-18
Designed for ages 13 to 18 in seventh through twelfth grade at levels 7 to 9, this dance bootcamp blends daily technique training with built-in breaks and mentoring from DT faculty alongside guest artists. Dancers dive into choreography, tap, acro, and tricks, plus introductory sewing skills, building strength and expanding versatility. The week concludes with an audition for Summer and Fall class placement and, for those who choose, the Performing Arts Company. Flexible scheduling includes full day and half day options. Tuition is $450 per week for full day or $230 per week for half day, with daily rates of $90 for full day or $50 for half day, and a per-class option at $20. Those who register for both weeks receive a 10 percent discount on the second camp tuition. A 50 percent deposit is due at enrollment.

The course begins and ends at the Christiansburg Recreation Center, following the Huckleberry Trail to a midpoint turnaround before heading back. The first 250 people to register are guaranteed a commemorative Montgomery County, VA 250 finisher shirt. Proclamation Theatre New Play Festival
Proclamation Theatre’s Heritage Day play festival is approaching with a focus on new work from local voices. The program showcases first public readings of original plays by area playwrights, with actors reading from scripts to bring these stories to life. New play submissions are welcome ahead of the stated deadline. The organizers are also looking for readers, with twenty adult roles available and a rehearsal schedule that is limited and flexible. Blacksburg en Blanc returns with an elegant picnic and a lively community atmosphere. Organizers set the scene with a professional tent on the lawn lit with cafe lights, along with tables, tablecloths, chairs, and a few decorative touches. Guests are encouraged to add their own creative flair. Live music will be provided by the Nickel'n Dimers. A silent auction is part of the evening, and proceeds support the foundation’s programming in the community. Trash cans and indoor restrooms will be available. Attendees bring their own picnic spread, beverages with or without alcohol, cutlery, and napkins. Think of it like a woodland picnic, you bring it in and you take it out. The gathering takes inspiration from the Dîner en Blanc tradition that began in Paris in 1988, when François Pasquier invited friends to a refined outdoor meal and asked everyone to wear white so they could find one another. The idea has since grown worldwide across six continents. In its classic form, diners supply their own food, tables, chairs, and tablecloths, and the location is shared with registered participants on the day of the dinner at a notable urban site.
