Blacksburg’s Market Square Jam spotlights Gina and Jason Dilg, Radford musicians rooted near Lovely Mount who perform lively dance tunes and old country ballads from the American string band tradition. Their lives in music span performance, dance, art, and teaching. Gina grew up in a family of musicians, has played Southern Appalachian music since childhood, and is a musician, dancer, and graphic artist who teaches fiddling and flatfoot dance. Jason is a respected interpreter of Appalachian dance tunes and ballads, a versatile multi-instrumentalist with numerous competition honors, a former adjunct banjo instructor at Naropa University, and the current instructor and director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians program in Montgomery County, Virginia. The duo was recently featured in the PBS docuseries Life in Virginia’s Appalachia: Flatfooting. Virginia Tech’s annual Humanities Week returns with Legacies of 1776, a weeklong lineup of lectures, conversations, and programs that explore how ideas of sovereignty, freedom, equality, and independence have changed over 250 years since the nation’s founding. The featured keynote, The Responsibilities of Being American, is presented by journalist, author, and longtime NPR host Scott Simon, who reflects on the meaning and duties of citizenship and invites audience participation through a question and answer session. The keynote takes place at the Lyric Theatre. This series is presented by the Center for Humanities and the Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Set in Montgomery County, home to Virginia Tech and still largely rural, nearly nine tenths of the landscape is forest and farmland, with about 68 percent in forest and 21 percent in agriculture. The itinerary highlights where trees are grown, how they become useful products, and the research that drives development and testing of wood-based materials. Stops include Turman Lumber Company, a family-run sawmill with nearly five decades of operation whose owners manage about 400,000 acres of local forests, where logs are transformed into lumber. At Virginia Tech’s Brooks Forest Products Center, learn how advanced technology evaluates packaging systems and materials, including work to strengthen pallets, improve the sustainability of temperature-controlled packaging, and create new building materials. Lunch is at Meadowbrook Community Center with a catered pasta bar from Pumpernickel Pickle. The tour concludes at Sowder Tree Farm, a 57-acre property focused on stewardship of Appalachian hardwoods and Eastern white pine alongside resident wildlife, with updates on collaborative research and outreach with Virginia Tech. Now in its 20th edition, Andrew Gold is a handicap road race with deep local roots, based at Bollo's Cafe & Bakery. First held in 2007 as a warm up for the Owen Cup, it is traditionally scheduled the weekend before that event. The handicap format spaces start times so riders come together near the finish. Slower categories set off first and faster categories depart later, a structure used at Blacksburg’s Wednesday Worlds that helps newer riders gain experience in a larger group while observing seasoned racers. For this edition, C to D men and B to C women receive a 15 minute head start, Men B and women A receive a 5 minute head start, and A men chase. The roll out from town is parade style on the familiar Wednesday Worlds route with no attacking or fast riding. The group proceeds down Draper, turns right on Airport Rd, crosses S Main St onto Ellet Rd, follows the Cedar Run descent to Luster’s Gate Rd, then continues to the corner of Harding Rd. There the field stops for a safety review, the handicap race begins, and open racing starts. The course begins at Luster’s Gate Rd and Harding Rd, then runs along Catawba Rd, Sandy Ridge Rd, Newport Rd, VA Route 311, Blacksburg Rd, Gravel Hill Rd, and Mt Tabor Rd, before looping via Sandy Ridge Rd, Blacksburg Rd, and Dry Run Rd. It returns to Mt Tabor Rd to finish at the green Blacksburg Corporate Limit sign. The route is mapped on Strava. Participants are reminded that the road is open, to keep their heads up and eyes open, to avoid crossing or crowding the yellow line, and to take care at all turns and at the one stop sign on Mt Tabor. The aim is to keep it fun for everyone. Ronde van DeLongen returns for its 18th running, a Blacksburg fall classic that brings together Virginia Tech road team members, alumni, local racers, and a few traveling guests to sharpen skills before winter and set spring race categories. This is a handicap road race designed to produce a close finish, with slower groups leaving first and the fastest riders chasing later, so working together within groups can make the difference. Head starts are set at fifteen minutes for C and D men along with B and C women, five minutes for Men B and Women A, and A riders chase. Participants gather at Bollo’s Cafe & Bakery for a neutral, parade style roll out that follows the familiar Wednesday Worlds route down Draper, onto Airport Road, across South Main Street onto Ellet Road, then down the Cedar Run descent to Lusters Gate at Harding where groups are staged and open racing begins. The course is technical and demanding with a mix of pavement and gravel, including Dry Run Road, the Gallion Ridge gravel climb, Sandy Ridge descents, the climb on Gravel Hill, and a final push up Cedar Run to a finish near the green Blacksburg corporate limit sign. Riders should remember that the roads are open, stay alert, avoid crossing the yellow line, use caution at all turns and at the Mount Tabor stop sign, and keep the focus on having fun. Established in 2009 as part of the Blacksburg Classics, this event complements the spring Owen Cup tradition that began in 2006. RAM will offer a free community clinic at Giles High School in Pearisburg, providing dental, vision, and general medical care on a first-come, first-served basis. Capacity can be reached quickly, particularly for dental and vision. When that happens, no additional patients can enter and operations begin to wind down, so arriving early improves the chance of being seen. On arrival, staff and volunteers will share guidance on next steps and clinic procedures. Because time is limited, patients may be asked to choose between dental and vision services, while general medical care is available to all who attend. The patient parking area will be open throughout the clinic and may open earlier than planned due to weather, volunteer changes, or other unforeseen circumstances, which can also affect the number of patients served. Those planning to arrive ahead of opening should bring water, food, necessary medications, and clothing suitable for the weather. Restrooms are available at the parking site. Care is provided at no cost, and no identification or insurance is required. Details can change. The trophy is back in play in a handicap-format event that aims to keep the finish close by sending the slower riders off first and the fastest last, encouraging teamwork to stay clear of the chase. The day begins at Bollo’s Cafe & Bakery with a neutral, parade-style rollout through town. The group stops at Slusser’s Chapel for instructions and staggered starts, then heads onto a route that uses Mt. Tabor Road, Sandy Ridge, Blacksburg Road, and Happy Hollow Road, with the finish at the top of Harding Avenue near the corner of Harding Road and Ascot Lane. Roads remain open to traffic, so riders are reminded to keep their heads up, avoid crossing the yellow line, take care at all turns, and be especially cautious at the stop sign on Mt. Tabor. Laps are set by category, with C completing one lap, B completing two, and A taking on three, and only the A race can put a name on the trophy. Riders may complete additional laps if they wish.
