A full-service farm stand in Blacksburg offers freshly harvested seasonal produce, eggs, and pasture-raised, organically fed meats. Staff are available to help with purchases from a broad selection that includes produce, pork, chicken, beef, honey, eggs, and handmade soap. Vegetables are Certified Naturally Grown and come solely from the farm’s own fields, grown with a focus on flavor and nutrition. Eggs are collected from the farm’s ducks and chickens, which live on pasture and eat certified organic feed. Poultry options, including chicken, duck, and turkey, are heritage breeds raised free range on the farm with certified organic feed. The farm also raises pigs that are moved through rotating paddocks and provided certified organic feed. Carpenter Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art, leads a 3 in 30 program connected to the special exhibition titled India’s Great Mughals: Art, Power, and Opulence. Through selected works in the permanent galleries, the program examines how the Mughal rulers, who often spark curiosity, were also fascinated by the Indian home they adopted. Participants gather in the Cochrane Atrium. Part of VMFA’s 3 in 30 series, this concise format features curators and educators discussing objects from the permanent collection and special exhibitions, exploring themes, artistic movements, or the work of a single artist. The pace settles through Battlefield Park with a short stop at Charles City Road, then ramps up again on the Charles City Road section for about 15 minutes in a rotating paceline, finishing with a sprint just before the railroad crossing at Monahan Road. The ride wraps up with a neutral return to the city. This is a full drop ride with average speeds around 15 to 20 mph in neutral sections and 25 mph or more during the harder efforts. Riders should have the route saved and be ready to navigate home if they drop from the group. The ride is canceled if it is raining.

They have collaborated with members of Tauk, Consider the Source, Lespecial, Goose, Eggy, and Twiddle, and they contribute to the Mono Means One collective. Their latest release, Piano Percussion Planet, features Thomas Xavier Kenney of Doom Flamingo and highlights the duo’s wide stylistic range. Gordon Sterling and The People bring a mix of soul, funk, and blues rock, woven with elements of jam rock and reggae, and a message centered on unity and awareness. Based in the nation’s capital, they have built a strong following and frequently play to full rooms. The music is led by Gordon Sterling’s energetic presence and reflective songwriting about Black experiences in America. Sterling, a Jamaican American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, has pursued this calling for over 25 years. The band’s 2022 debut album, Truth, spans tender soul to high energy grooves, and its title track won Best Funk or Blues Song at the 2023 Washington DC Wammie Awards. Their songs focus on reflection, identity, community, and love.

Blacksburg’s Market Square Jam spotlights Gina and Jason Dilg, Radford musicians rooted near Lovely Mount who perform lively dance tunes and old country ballads from the American string band tradition. Their lives in music span performance, dance, art, and teaching. Gina grew up in a family of musicians, has played Southern Appalachian music since childhood, and is a musician, dancer, and graphic artist who teaches fiddling and flatfoot dance. Jason is a respected interpreter of Appalachian dance tunes and ballads, a versatile multi-instrumentalist with numerous competition honors, a former adjunct banjo instructor at Naropa University, and the current instructor and director of the Junior Appalachian Musicians program in Montgomery County, Virginia. The duo was recently featured in the PBS docuseries Life in Virginia’s Appalachia: Flatfooting. As an official Crooked Road affiliated venue, the Market Square Jam centers on traditional Old Time music and brings musicians together to trade tunes with friends and family in downtown Blacksburg at Market Square Park.

Montgomery County - 50th Anniversary Fall Forestry & Wildlife Field Tours
This field tour honors the longest-running forest landowner program in Virginia and features curated stops along the way plus a few giveaways. Set in Montgomery County, home to Virginia Tech and still largely rural, nearly nine tenths of the landscape is forest and farmland, with about 68 percent in forest and 21 percent in agriculture. The itinerary highlights where trees are grown, how they become useful products, and the research that drives development and testing of wood-based materials. Stops include Turman Lumber Company, a family-run sawmill with nearly five decades of operation whose owners manage about 400,000 acres of local forests, where logs are transformed into lumber. At Virginia Tech’s Brooks Forest Products Center, learn how advanced technology evaluates packaging systems and materials, including work to strengthen pallets, improve the sustainability of temperature-controlled packaging, and create new building materials. Lunch is at Meadowbrook Community Center with a catered pasta bar from Pumpernickel Pickle. The tour concludes at Sowder Tree Farm, a 57-acre property focused on stewardship of Appalachian hardwoods and Eastern white pine alongside resident wildlife, with updates on collaborative research and outreach with Virginia Tech. Now in its 20th edition, Andrew Gold is a handicap road race with deep local roots, based at Bollo's Cafe & Bakery. First held in 2007 as a warm up for the Owen Cup, it is traditionally scheduled the weekend before that event. The handicap format spaces start times so riders come together near the finish. Slower categories set off first and faster categories depart later, a structure used at Blacksburg’s Wednesday Worlds that helps newer riders gain experience in a larger group while observing seasoned racers. For this edition, C to D men and B to C women receive a 15 minute head start, Men B and women A receive a 5 minute head start, and A men chase. The roll out from town is parade style on the familiar Wednesday Worlds route with no attacking or fast riding. The group proceeds down Draper, turns right on Airport Rd, crosses S Main St onto Ellet Rd, follows the Cedar Run descent to Luster’s Gate Rd, then continues to the corner of Harding Rd. There the field stops for a safety review, the handicap race begins, and open racing starts. The course begins at Luster’s Gate Rd and Harding Rd, then runs along Catawba Rd, Sandy Ridge Rd, Newport Rd, VA Route 311, Blacksburg Rd, Gravel Hill Rd, and Mt Tabor Rd, before looping via Sandy Ridge Rd, Blacksburg Rd, and Dry Run Rd. It returns to Mt Tabor Rd to finish at the green Blacksburg Corporate Limit sign. The route is mapped on Strava. Participants are reminded that the road is open, to keep their heads up and eyes open, to avoid crossing or crowding the yellow line, and to take care at all turns and at the one stop sign on Mt Tabor. The aim is to keep it fun for everyone.
