Free events in Colonial Beach, VA

George Washington Birthplace National Monument hosts an evening program celebrating the wonders of the night sky. This free event begins with an interpretive talk about how stars have influenced the American story, from their place on the U.S. flag to milestones in space exploration. After the talk, park rangers guide stargazing activities that include identifying constellations, locating the Andromeda Galaxy, and viewing Saturn through a telescope. Visitors also learn practical ways to help protect natural dark sky environments in their communities. Regular park operations continue during normal hours on the day of the program. If weather interferes with stargazing, the event will be postponed to the following day.

Discover the Old Jail Museum, a noted landmark in the heart of Leonardtown, as it offers extended hours for Leonardtown First Fridays. Enjoy a complimentary, drop-in tour of this distinctive historic site while taking in the First Friday activities that evening. Knowledgeable staff will be available to share the museum’s story and highlight notable features. The building also serves as the official Leonardtown Visitor Center, with information and printed materials on local attractions, activities, dining, and events. An onsite shop features local products, books, apparel, and items for kids. Admission is free for all ages, and entry is walk-in only.

Experience a welcoming audience participation drum circle where everyone can play. The gathering is free and open to all ages and skill levels. Bring a percussion instrument or use one that is provided. Activities take place on the lawn beside the St. Mary's County Arts Council office, with an indoor location used if there is rain or excessive heat. Participants are welcome to stay for the full session or stop by for a shorter visit. Hosted by St. Mary's County Arts Council, led by the SoMar Drummers, and sponsored by Nick Stellway, CCIM, of Hyatt Commercial.

A youth drumline performance adds energy to the 2026 First Friday series with a free, outdoor showcase. It takes place on the grassy area beside the office near the Leonardtown Arts Center building. Seating is limited, so bringing a blanket or a chair is recommended. If rain is in the forecast, the event will be canceled and an announcement will be posted.
