8780 Lorton Rd, Lorton · verified Oct 9
    See details

Tackle a 5k, 10k, or half marathon on the scenic routes at Laurel Hill Park Central Green, where the course is mostly single-track dirt with rolling hills and starts and finishes on pavement. The half marathon completes the loop twice. Walkers are welcome, and a virtual option is available. Participants receive a finisher’s coin, a technical Drifit event shirt, and a chip-timed experience. Points count toward the Year-Long 5k, 10k, Endurance and Back of the Pack Series, as well as the Fall Series. The Back of the Pack program is not a cutoff; it highlights athletes who average paces above a posted benchmark so runners of similar speed can compete for series points. Water stations are positioned along each course, including two on the 5k near miles 0.8 and 2.3, five on the 10k around 0.8, 2.3, 3.1, 3.9 and 5.4, and ten on the half marathon near 0.8, 1.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.75, 7.35, 8.1, 10.1, 11.1 and 12.3. Some stations offer Gatorade, and placements may be adjusted as needed. Restrooms are available around the park. Course maps and elevation details are provided. Live results and runner tracking are available, with final standings and series points posted online. Awards recognize the top three men and women overall, plus first and second place in the following age groups for each race: 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 plus. Overall podium finishers do not also place in age groups. Staff photos are shared on social media, and a social media challenge offers a chance at 50% off a future race for a standout post. The event partners with Operation Turbo and its Boxes of Home initiative. This is an all-weather race, and any schedule changes are communicated to registered participants and on social channels.

    MASON BANDS: Vivo

Center for the Arts, Concert Hall, 4400 University Dr, Fairfax
    See details

Vivo celebrates the spark, imagination, and bold expression of music being written today, treating the present as a vivid landscape rather than a far horizon. The program opens with the Mason Symphonic Band offering three distinct voices in the contemporary wind repertoire: Vaclav Nelhybel’s Festivo brims with rhythmic celebration, Nishant Amatya’s as the fog settles invites quiet reflection, and Benjamin Taylor’s Shattering Infinity surges with unrelenting momentum. A feature presentation by the combined South County HS and Hayfield Secondary School Bands, led by Kevin Engdahl and Robert Specketer, continues the focus on living composers and fresh perspectives. The Mason Wind Symphony then takes the stage with Zhou Tian’s Vivo, a burst of color and drive that gives the evening its name and spirit. The third movement of Stacy Garrop’s Quicksilver follows, showcasing Mason’s Professor of Saxophone, Dr. Connor Mikula, in a display of agility and lyricism. Viet Cuong’s John and Jim reflects on love, memory, and human connection, weaving gentle echoes of Pachelbel’s Canon in D into a tender musical conversation. The journey concludes with James David’s Ghosts of the Old Year, shaped by jazz, blues, and the hymn Beach Spring from the shape note tradition, acknowledging the weight of the past while looking ahead with hope. For the Mason Wind Symphony, the program carries added significance through its selection as a Featured Concert Ensemble at the Virginia Music Educators Association Conference, a recognition of artistry, curiosity, and craft. From start to finish, the spirit of vivo...lively, vigorous, and fresh...animates every page and affirms that contemporary music is very much alive.
