A Halloween weekend of Cuban music and dance arrives in Washington, DC with guest artist Rachel Ortiz. Originally from Santiago de Cuba and a former principal dancer with the internationally renowned All Stars Santiago de Cuba, she is now based in Florida and brings a style rooted in Santiago’s Afro-Cuban and Franco-Haitian heritage. Presented by DC Casineros, the festivities blend Son Cubano, Timba and Reparto with Casino and Rueda de Casino. The weekend opens with a Cuban dance social and Halloween party at Dance Place Main Theater. It begins with a Cuban popular dance and musicality session led by Rachel, then continues with social dancing featuring DJ Cokie and DJ.1999 spinning Cuban popular music. Costumes that are easy to dance in are encouraged. Drinks, appetizers, liquor and wine will be available for purchase. Workshops with Rachel follow the next day, covering Son Cubano in the Santiaguero style, intermediate to advanced Rueda de Casino with combinations inspired by All Stars Santiago de Cuba for dancers with prior Rueda experience, and Cuban styling for men and women focusing on body movement, musical expression and personal style. There will be some downtime while the kiln runs, with the option to make additional work in the studio, followed by quick team unloading once each firing is complete. Safety is essential around heat and smoke, so cotton clothing is recommended and long hair should be tied back. Glazing happens at the start of the workshop with a cut off for the first firing, and there is time to keep glazing for later rounds. Glazes are provided, and participants may bring a commercial raku glaze to test. This is a BYOB event… bring your own bisqueware.
