Participants glaze bisque-fired pieces, then see them lifted from the kiln while red hot and placed into metal containers with materials like sawdust or newspaper. The resulting reduction creates striking effects such as varied colors, crackle patterns, and metallic surfaces, with beautifully unpredictable outcomes. Raku finishes are not food safe and are rarely watertight, making these pieces best suited for display. The kiln will be fired at least twice during the session, with time set aside to relax while firings run. Studio space can be used to make additional work while waiting, but once a firing ends quick unloading is required and everyone takes part. Cotton clothing and tied-back long hair are recommended, and participants should be comfortable with heat and smoke as the process involves burning combustibles and active teamwork around hot equipment. Glazing begins at the start of the workshop with a cutoff for the first firing, and there is time to continue glazing for later rounds. Glazes are provided, and commercially made raku glazes may be brought to try. Staff facilitate the firings and answer questions, and all students are expected to assist with the firing and cleanup. This is not a rain or shine event, so unfavorable weather such as rain or lightning will result in cancellation and rescheduling. The class is open to ages 16 through adult, led by Deb Balestreri, with a seating limit of 10. Tuition is $115 plus a $25 materials fee. Participants bring their own bisqueware. There is no set limit on how many pieces to bring, though not all may be fired, and every effort is made to include as many as possible. A helpful guideline is 6 to 8 small to medium vessels per person. Small pieces are about 5 inches or smaller, medium pieces up to 8 inches, and anything larger counts as two pieces. Flat work is not accepted. Arriving early increases the chance of getting more pieces into the kiln.

The workshop includes 40 minutes of instruction along with three air plants, decorative rocks, driftwood, decorative moss, and dried mushrooms. A glass container is not part of the registration. Containers and extra plants are available during the workshop at a 10% discount, or bring your own. Plan to arrive 5 to 10 minutes early for check-in so the session can begin on time. Children ages 9 and older are welcome, with space for one guardian per participant under 18. Registrations are non-refundable. Families are welcome to take part together, and anyone who wishes to make their own piece should register individually. Parents who create their own artwork need to register, while parents who are only helping their children do not need to register. Tuition includes all clay, access to communal tools, and multiple firings. Bring a hand towel and wear clothing that can get clay or paint on it. Seating is limited to 12 participants.
