A classic fast Sunday group ride in Richmond, once known as the CBC Sunday Morning Ride, offers a demanding 40 mile workout built around two focused efforts lasting about 15 to 20 minutes each. It is a drop ride intended for riders comfortable with higher speeds and group riding skills. The group rolls out of the city at an easy pace, stays together, stops at red lights, and follows traffic laws, with a brief nature break at Osborne Turnpike. The first hard section runs from Osborne to Kingsland for roughly 20 minutes in a rotating paceline and finishes with a sprint at the corner of Kingsland and WRVA Road. The ride then moves calmly through Battlefield Park with a short stop at Charles City Road. The second effort is about 15 minutes on Charles City Road, again using a rotating paceline, ending with a sprint just before the railroad crossing at Monahan Road. The return to the city is neutral. Expect average speeds of about 15 to 20 mph during neutral sections and 25 mph or more during the harder efforts. Riders should have the route saved and be prepared to navigate home if dropped. If that happens, many try again another week to hang on a bit longer. The ride is canceled if it is raining.
