Buzz InnSociety Red
Society Red spotlights original compositions by Dexter Gordon, brought to life by an ensemble conceived in 2025 by longtime friends Gavin Calkins and Jeremy Shaskus, who met in Roosevelt High School’s jazz band in 2005 and 2006. With musicians from varied musical paths, the group focuses on Gordon’s lesser known pieces and gives them fresh attention. On tenor sax, Seattle native Gavin Calkins returned to the instrument after a fifteen year break during the COVID-19 lockdown. His early studies with Mike Edwards and Denny Goodhew, a scholarship to the Teagarden Jazz Camp at Sly Park, and performances with the Roosevelt Jazz Band at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference, the Essentially Ellington Festival, and festivals in Europe shaped his foundation. Recent ensemble work at Jazz Night School and Seattle Jazz Academy, along with private study with Neil Welch and Gary Hammon, further informs his sound. Woodwind player and composer arranger Jeremy Shaskus is an alumnus of the Roosevelt Jazz Band and William Paterson University’s jazz program. After working professionally in the Tri State area he returned to Seattle in 2014. Highlights include touring and recording with David Haney of Cadence Jazz Magazine, performing with Bernard Purdie and Julian Priester, presenting original music three years in a row for Earshot’s Jazz in the 2nd Century, more than a decade performing with Marc Smason, and an eight year tenure as horn arranger and saxophonist with Breaks & Swells. During the pandemic he produced the short lived podcast That Seattle Swing with Darian Asplund and Alex Dugdale, explored production, broadcast, and teaching as venues reopened, and then returned to his roots as a jazz musician. At the piano, Trevor Cohen is a professor of biomedical informatics at the University of Washington who grew up in a musical family in Cape Town. He studied with Henry February and Merton Barrows, performed locally while in medical school, continued study in New York City with Samir Chatterjee, Efrain Toro, and Tim Lyddon, and attended workshops with Barry Harris and Howard Reese. He is currently enjoying a renewed commitment to collective improvisation within Seattle’s jazz community. Bassist Court Crawford brings decades of experience as a performer, composer, arranger, producer, audio engineer, and teacher. Raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, he has performed across the United States, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, and Puerto Rico since 1979. His career includes recording and performing with Sonny Simmons and Barbara Donald, as well as co founding the Olympia Chamber Orchestra. He performs regularly in the local Latin and salsa scene with Yambambo and Monamor. On drums, Sandy Greenbaum began playing at 12, was touring the West Coast by 21 while leading a 1980s new wave band, and later relocated to the Pacific Northwest, adding Canada to his list of stops. A long record of collaborations with producers and artists across genres, along with deep technical skill, underscores his reputation for professionalism. Together, these voices channel the spirit of Dexter Gordon while shining a light on music that deserves to be heard more often.

North Cove ParkThe Stripped Path : Shadow Work with Goddess Ereshkigal
The Stripped Path is a deep, immersive goddess circle centered on Ereshkigal, the ancient Sumerian Queen of the Great Below, and the courageous shadow work she calls forth. It invites attention to what has been hidden away... the grief that went unseen, the anger that was never given room, and the power that was set aside in order to be accepted. Guided by the myth of Inanna’s descent through seven gates, where all adornments are released, participants are encouraged to meet what remains with honesty and care. The gathering follows this seven-gate journey inward through reflection, guided trance, shared witnessing, and an intentional return. It includes a retelling of Inanna’s descent, contemplations at each gate, a facilitated shadow exploration, a supportive sharing circle, sound-based healing, time for integration, and a closing ritual. This experience welcomes those who feel drawn inward, who sense an unnamed weight they have been carrying, and who are ready to move from performance to reclamation. You do not need everything figured out beforehand, only a willingness to look. Attendance is kept intimate to protect the depth of the work. Mats, pillows, blankets, and eye masks are provided. Bringing a journal, pen, and water bottle is recommended. Late entry is not permitted, so plan to arrive a little early to settle in, as late arrivals will not be admitted and refunds are not offered.
