Learn how to plan and draw your own comics page, arranged in six or nine panels, with guidance from Kelly Froh, a comic artist who serves as executive director of Seattle’s Short Run Comix Festival. No prior art experience is required and all materials will be provided. Participants may bring a favorite pen or pencil or a personal sketchbook or journal, and are encouraged to arrive with a story idea to turn into comics. This session is intended for teens and tweens ages 11 to 18, and registration is preferred. Kelly’s work, often drawn from her life, has appeared in The Seattle Weekly, The Seattle Review of Books, The Stranger, and The Women’s Review of Books, and she has self-published more than 60 zines and mini comics. The program is part of Sno-Isle Libraries Summer Reading and is supported by the Friends of the Marysville Library.

Starts are held in the river on a line between a race committee flag on shore and a piling near Jetty Island, with course choices and final instructions posted at the line by the race committee. There is no set agenda or expected outcome, just respectful conversation in a comfortable setting. This is not therapy or a grief support meeting. Participants guide the discussion, which may touch on philosophy, personal stories, cultural traditions, and practical end-of-life planning. Conversations are kept confidential, and the tone emphasizes thoughtful listening and considerate participation without selling, proselytizing, or pushing a single viewpoint. Admission is free, and coffee and light snacks, including cake, are provided.
