Stephen Jenkinson’s storytelling anchors the night. He founded the Orphan Wisdom School with Nathalie Roy in 2010, has taught internationally, and holds graduate degrees in theology from Harvard and social work from the University of Toronto. Apprenticed to a master storyteller, he worked closely with dying people and their families, served as a program director in a major Canadian hospital, and taught in a prominent Canadian medical school. His books include Trembling, Still: The Awful Clarity of a Mind in Eclipse (2026), Matrimony: Ritual, Culture and the Heart’s Work (2025), Reckoning (with Kimberly Ann Johnson, 2022), A Generation’s Worth: Spirit Work While the Crisis Reigns (2021), Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble (2018), and Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul (2015). He has developed a creation process with Indigenous artists and collaborated with incarcerated women on songs written and recorded in prisons for Why The Caged Bird Sings. His work includes writing for film and television, supported by grants from OAC and Canada Council, along with a Chalmers Fellowship and a Chalmers Professional Development award. Recordings from the project include a 2017 live collection titled Nights of Grief & Mystery, the 2020 releases Dark Roads (live) and Rough Gods, and Caldera in 2026, a limited edition double vinyl with nine new pieces.
