It features three connected parts that build on each other: an opening discussion about photography and light, a hands-on field shoot, and a review of images created during the session. Instruction covers tools both on and off the camera and includes practical ways to use these techniques on a phone camera. Time in the field allows for one-on-one guidance, followed by a constructive evaluation to see what worked and where there is room for improvement. The workshop is led by Susanna Gaunt, who taught photography for 10 years+ at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, Montana, and currently runs the Youth Photography Club for teens at Duluth Art Institute. Before expanding to mixed media, she photographed a range of subjects from architecture to close-ups and often worked in series, including Home Life, one of her last photographic projects that offered a backstage pass to parenting and highlighted many facets of raising kids. Now in its 32nd year, this harvest festival at Bayfront Festival Park is presented by the Sustainable Farming Association and centers on local food, farmers, and community. The day features a bustling farmers market, live music from start to finish, a nonprofit expo, an art and craft fair, an energy fair, a diverse food court, and educational demonstrations. Admission is free and family friendly, with a suggested donation at the entrance of $5 per person or $10 per family, or pay what you can. Parking on site is $10, and accessible parking is available near the entrance. Walking, biking, busing, or carpooling is encouraged. Bring reusable bags and use the produce check station at the LSSFA information tent near the main entrance to lighten your load while you explore. A River Revival field visit highlights the return of Ishkode, or good fire, to Wisconsin Point and its importance for forest health, cultural connections, and ecological balance in the St. Louis River Estuary. Organized by the St. Louis River Alliance with regional collaborators, the program features a guided walk of about a mile over uneven forest terrain through a culturally prescribed burn area to observe early regeneration. Completed in collaboration with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the burn marks the first reintroduction of fire to this landscape in more than 150 years and advances efforts to improve forest resilience, reduce wildfire risk, and revitalize Indigenous stewardship practices. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. This event is presented in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Lake Superior Headwaters Sustainability Partnership, with support from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

With more than fifty events under its belt, the approach has helped many people connect in a way that feels accessible, interesting, and low stress. Ross Thorn’s residency at Ursa Minor Brewing returns for its seventh year with a monthly format that blends live music and community support. At each installment, Ross and a full band take song requests for tips, then donate the proceeds to a local organization or a good cause. Past recipients include Men as Peacemakers, Trans Northland, Mentor North, Harm Reduction Sisters, the Interfaith Committee for Migrant Justice, CHUM, the Damiano Center, and the ACLU of MN. Art made by Familiar Firs adds a creative touch to the experience.

Wild Duluth features two ultramarathon distances, a 100K and a 50K, set on the Superior Hiking Trail’s beautiful and demanding terrain. Experience fall raptor migration at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory during an accessible, free bird observation program celebrating World Migratory Bird Day. Large birds of prey such as Bald and Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks, and Northern Goshawks are moving to their wintering grounds, offering opportunities to observe this seasonal spectacle. The event welcomes people of all ages, abilities, and disabilities. American Sign Language interpretation is provided. Fifteen pairs of binoculars and a spotting scope will be available to borrow, along with a wheelchair mount for binoculars and some portable seating. Attendees may stay for the full program or come and go as needed. Free bus transportation is offered with pick-ups in Superior and Duluth. Seats are reserved for those who registered for the bus, and the bus cannot accommodate additional drop-in riders. The vehicle is a school bus from Voyageur Bus Company with steps for entry, a wheelchair lift, four wheelchair spots, and seating for approximately 25 adults. A staff member will be at each bus stop holding an Everyone Can Bird sign, and one ASL interpreter will be on the bus starting in Superior. The bus remains on site for the duration and returns to the two pick-up locations after the program. Driving directly to the site is also an option. Registering in advance helps organizers plan and communicate, but it is not required to attend.
