The National Field Trial brings Vizsla competitors to the M. Barnett Lawley Forever Wild Field Trial Area for a multi-stake championship event. Titles for National Field Champion and National Amateur Field Champion are on the line, and a Derby Classic is included. Entry into any stake requires that each dog meet the specific qualifications for that stake. The National Amateur Field Championship is open to Vizslas at least six months old that have either earned an AKC Amateur Field Champion title or placed in the top four of an eligible amateur stake with at least eight starters. It runs in two series. The first is a 30-minute single course without a bird field and is non-retrieving with a blank pistol only. The second features retrieving either in a designated area or with the first bird shot on course and lasts 45 minutes, with gunning by designated gunners. The same handler must run the dog in both series for this stake. Dogs that find no birds in the first series are not called back except under extremely unusual circumstances, and dogs that go bird-less in the second series are not called back for a retrieve. Horseback handling is allowed in both series. Placements may include a champion and additional awards, with judging conducted under AKC field trial rules and pointing dog guidelines for stakes requiring a retrieve. The Derby Classic is for Vizslas older than six months and under two years on the first advertised day of the trial that have won an amateur or open puppy stake or placed in an amateur or open derby stake. It is a 30-minute stake with placements through fourth and possible judges awards of merit, judged to the Derby Standard in the AKC Field Trial Rules and Standard Procedure for Pointing Breeds. The National Field Championship is open to Vizslas at least six months old that have earned an AKC Field Champion or Amateur Field Champion title, or that have placed in the top four of an eligible open or amateur stake with at least thirteen starters. This championship also runs in two series. The first is a 30-minute single course without a bird field and is non-retrieving with a blank pistol only. The second is 60 minutes with designated gunners and includes retrieving either in a designated area or with the first bird shot on course. Dogs that have no bird work in the first series are not invited to the second except in the most unusual circumstances, and dogs without bird work in the second are not called back for a retrieve. Horseback handling is permitted in both series. A champion may be named along with additional placements and possible judges awards of merit, with judging under AKC rules and pointing dog guidelines for stakes requiring a retrieve. Eligibility is for Vizslas over six months and under fifteen months of age. The stake runs 20 minutes, offers placements through fourth with possible judges awards of merit, and is judged to the AKC Puppy Standard. No blank is fired on bird contact, and bird contact is not required for a placement.
