Hobby HoleDiver Stress and Rescue
Build the skills to prevent and manage problems in the water with a comprehensive Diver Stress and Rescue course. Through a blend of knowledge development, hands-on rescue exercises, and realistic scenarios, participants learn what to look for and how to respond to both minor issues and serious emergencies. Training covers self rescue, recognizing and managing stress in other divers, emergency planning and equipment use, and assisting panicked or unresponsive divers. To participate and earn certification, attendees must be at least 12 years old, be physically capable of completing the required skills, and hold current O2 Provider, First Aid, and CPR training completed within the previous two years. This certification is required to become a Master Diver.

The City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Board Member Darlene Skier and District 9 Councilman Charles Jinwright, presents the inaugural Jewell Pitts Memorial Pickleball Classic at Dean Fain Park. This round robin competition features nine divisions across men’s, women’s, and mixed play, with brackets for beginner (2.5–3.0), intermediate (3.5–4.0), and advanced (4.5+) players. Participants may enter up to two categories. Registration is $50 per person for each category, and partners register separately. A total of $5,000 will be awarded across all advanced divisions, with additional prizes for winners and finalists in every category. Tickets are available. When the show wraps, the excitement continues with the Saturday of Speed Twin 73’s race program for a full slate of on-track action. Participants create multiple artworks that favor spontaneity and fluid movement rather than rigid planning. His work has been juried into national and international exhibitions and is represented by several fine art galleries. He is a member of the Mississippi Art Colony and is part of the international watercolor group FabrianoInAcquarello, which brings together artists from 88 countries. Join the MAzing 100 minute MASH at Montgomery Academy for a fast-paced 100-minute relay race. Relay teams of 3 to 6 runners will all compete at the same time, working together to complete as many 1/2 mile loops as possible over the full 100 minutes. Teams will be grouped into divisions for HS and MS, with male, female, and co-ed categories. The team with the most completed loops wins. The course is a 1/2 mile grass route with a few pavement crossings, and starting is on the soccer field inside the track before looping behind the track and around campus back to the track. Spikes or training flats are allowed, with training flats recommended.

Founded in 2007, the coalition established the Champion of Character Award in 2015 to recognize individuals who inspire others to live and lead with strong values. This year’s honoree is Rick Karle, a 43-year television news veteran who has spent 37 years in Birmingham. His career includes three decades at WBRC as sports director beginning in 1989, where he helped launch the “Sideline” high school football program, followed by a four-year tenure as a morning news anchor at WVTM 13. His accolades include more than 50 Associated Press awards, 24 regional Emmy Awards, a National Edward R. Murrow Award, and a lifetime Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Atlanta Chapter. In 2023 he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and received the Mel Allen Award for broadcasting. His service and outreach include work as a Heisman voter, a board member with the American Cancer Society, and co-host of the Cerebral Palsy Telethon. He is currently a partner at Sky High Studios, writes for AL.com, co-hosts The Good Company Podcast, and shares uplifting stories on his Rick Karle Good News Facebook page. USS Oriskany, The LuLu, and Navy Tugs Weekend (Oct. 10-11, 2026)
A weekend of scuba diving pairs a first day on the USS Oriskany with a second day exploring the Lulu and nearby Navy tugboats. The USS Oriskany (CV-34) is an 888 foot Essex class aircraft carrier intentionally placed on the seafloor to create the Great Carrier Reef. It rests upright roughly 22 to 25 miles off Pensacola in the Gulf of Mexico, reaching a maximum depth near 212 feet, and is considered a premier yet challenging site for certified divers. The Lulu, a 271 foot retired coastal freighter located about 17 nautical miles south of Perdido Pass in Orange Beach, offers a multi level layout with accessible rooms, large openings, and shadowed spaces that invite discovery. 5th Annual Cycle for Kids
This yearly charity poker run ride raises funds for the Autauaga County Children's Policy Council, supporting children in need in the local community. The route features stops at WVC, VFW 1349, The Turtle, and Harley-Davidson. Entry is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers. Food and entertainment will be provided, with details to be announced.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 122Horsepower and Heros Car and Bike show
Hosted by Let's Sell Realty & Rods in partnership with the Autauga County Rescue Squad and the Autauga County Fairgrounds, this community car and bike show kicks off the Autauga County Fair with a showcase of standout vehicles, live music, tasty food, and activities for all ages. All proceeds benefit the Autauga County Rescue Squad. Sponsorships are available for $125 and include one vendor booth, one vehicle entry, and logo placement on event advertising. Vendor spaces are $75 and must be paid in full prior to the event. Families can look forward to kid friendly attractions alongside cars and motorcycles for a spirited start to the fair.
