The USS Oriskany (CV-34) is an 888 foot Essex class aircraft carrier intentionally placed on the seafloor to create the Great Carrier Reef. It rests upright roughly 22 to 25 miles off Pensacola in the Gulf of Mexico, reaching a maximum depth near 212 feet, and is considered a premier yet challenging site for certified divers. The Lulu, a 271 foot retired coastal freighter located about 17 nautical miles south of Perdido Pass in Orange Beach, offers a multi level layout with accessible rooms, large openings, and shadowed spaces that invite discovery. Alongside the Navy tugs, the Lulu provides varied depths and an engaging experience for both newer and seasoned divers. All of these sites are well suited for working toward Deep Diver certification.

This national field trial recognizes two top honors, National Field Champion and National Amateur Field Champion, with additional opportunities in the Derby Classic and, if offered, an Open Puppy stake. Entry for each stake is limited to Vizslas that meet the published qualifications. The National Amateur Field Championship is open to dogs six months and older that have either earned the AKC Amateur Field Champion title or placed first through fourth in designated amateur stakes at an AKC-licensed or member field trial with at least eight starters. It runs in two parts. The first is a 30-minute, non-retrieving series on a single course without a bird field where only a blank pistol is used. The second is a 45-minute retrieving series, either in a designated area or with the first bird taken on course by designated gunners. The same handler must run the dog in both parts, horseback handling is permitted, and a dog without bird work in the first series will not advance except in rare, exceptional situations. Dogs without bird work in the second series are not called back for a retrieve. Judging follows AKC rules and pointing dog guidelines, and if a champion is named, the NATIONAL AMATEUR FIELD CHAMPION title is awarded along with up to three additional placements and possible Judges’ Awards of Merit. If no dog reaches championship caliber, first place is withheld, though remaining placements may still be awarded. The National Field Championship is open to dogs six months and older that have an AKC Field Champion or Amateur Field Champion title, or that have finished first through fourth in specific open or amateur all-age or gun dog stakes at an AKC-licensed or member trial with at least thirteen starters. It also uses two series. The opening series is 30 minutes on a single course without a bird field and is non-retrieving with blank pistol only. The second series is 60 minutes and includes retrieving, with birds shot only by designated gunners, and the same handler must handle in both series. Horseback handling is allowed in both parts, and the same bird-work requirements apply as in the amateur championship. Judging adheres to AKC procedures and guidelines, and when a champion is declared, the NATIONAL FIELD CHAMPION title is awarded with up to three additional placements and possible Judges’ Awards of Merit. If no dog meets the standard, first place is not awarded and the remaining placements may still be given. The Derby Classic welcomes Vizslas older than six months and under two years as of the first advertised day who have previously won a puppy stake or placed in a derby stake, amateur or open. It is a 30-minute stake judged under the AKC Derby Standard, with placements through fourth and possible Judges’ Awards of Merit. If the Open Puppy stake is added by the National Field Trial Committee, it follows the National Gun Dog Championship guidelines and the Puppy Classic appendices, must be reflected in the approved budget, and is open to Vizslas over six months and under fifteen months. This optional stake runs 20 minutes, is judged under the AKC Puppy Standard, does not use a blank on bird contact, and does not require bird contact for consideration. Placements through fourth and Judges’ Awards of Merit may be presented.
