    The Prattville-Autauga Character Coalition hosts its annual Champions of Character event at Central Alabama Community College, featuring a silent auction and dinner and recognizing the 2026 Champion of Character, Rick Karle. Founded in 2007, the Coalition is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the community by promoting character development and education. It created the Champion of Character Award in 2015 to honor leaders who demonstrate exemplary character and encourage integrity in everyday life. Rick Karle is a 43-year veteran of television news and a native of Syracuse, New York. He has spent decades in the South, including many years in Birmingham, and began as sports director at WBRC in 1989 after overcoming cancer. During three decades at Channel 6 he helped launch the popular Sideline high school football show and earned more than 50 Associated Press awards, 24 regional Emmy Awards, and a national Edward R. Murrow Award. He later served as a morning news anchor at WVTM 13 and in 2023 received a lifetime Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Atlanta Chapter. That same year he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and received the Mel Allen Award for broadcasting. His service includes time as a Heisman voter, a board member with the American Cancer Society, and a co-host of the Cerebral Palsy Telethon. He is currently a partner at Sky High Studios, writes for AL.com, co-hosts The Good Company Podcast, and shares positive stories on his Rick Karle Good News Facebook page. He has been married for 42 years to Jill, a Shelby County attorney, and their son Noah and daughter Mia are graduates of Vanderbilt University and New York University, respectively.
