Concert: Maya de Vitry and Mark Erelli

Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar St, Berkeley · verified Oct 4
    See details

This concert features singer songwriter Maya de Vitry with an opening set from Mark Erelli. Raised in the rolling hills of Lancaster County and now based in Nashville, de Vitry began as a fiddler and has grown into a writer whose voice balances tenderness and strength. Her songs travel from canyons and kitchens to cold lakes and highway truck stops, weaving together joy, sorrow, and unflinching honesty. The stories can span hungover bachelorettes in the Nashville airport to reflections on the confines of our own adaptations, all rooted in a belief in the power of song to change us. De Vitry first came to prominence with The Stray Birds, releasing four full-length albums and two EPs while touring for seven years across the United States, Canada, and Europe. She launched her solo work with Adaptations in 2019, followed by How to Break a Fall, Violet Light, The Only Moment, the EP Infinite, and a run of singles. Her fifth album, All My Faith, embraces the spontaneity of live performance and a truth-seeking lyrical focus. Recorded and mixed by five time Grammy winner Sean Sullivan and self produced, it brings together a close circle of collaborators on her Mad Maker Studio label. Mark Erelli opens with a distinctive blend of rock, folk, and Americana, pairing lyrical depth with intricate instrumentation. His career includes collaborations with Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, and Anaïs Mitchell, opening slots with Marc Cohn, Watchhouse, and Josh Ritter, fourteen solo albums and three with the bluegrass band Barnstar!, and production work on two records for Grammy winning artist Lori McKenna.

Creative Movement: A Somatic Dance Journey

Green Yogi Telegraph, 2807 Telegraph Ave, Berkeley · verified Oct 2
    See details

Creative Movement is a somatic, meditative dance practice that nurtures embodied awareness and genuine expression. Guided musical journeys and intentional activation of the body support a gradual awakening of sensation, emotional understanding, and intuitive clarity. This is not a choreography class. It offers a structured yet flexible container where movement becomes inquiry, and rhythm, breath, and presence help illuminate how participants relate to themselves, to others, and to the moment at hand. Open to anyone curious about movement as a path to self-awareness, creativity, and emotional integration, this class welcomes all levels and requires no prior dance experience. It is especially supportive for those wishing to reconnect with their bodies, release stress, and explore authentic expression in a safe and welcoming environment. A typical session begins with arrival and grounding through gentle guidance, breath awareness, and whole-body activation. The heart of the experience unfolds as a movement journey with curated music and simple prompts that invite exploration of rhythm and sensation. The closing period focuses on slowing down, integrating the experience, and reflecting. The opening and ending are gently guided, while the middle offers spacious time for personal exploration within a held, supportive space. Participants often leave with a deeper connection to their bodies and inner awareness, practical tools for regulating the nervous system through movement and breath, greater emotional clarity and self-trust, and renewed creative freedom. The intention is to strengthen the capacity to show up fully embodied, rooted in personal wisdom, aligned with inner truth, and confident in creative expression. All are welcome. Facilitated by Magalí Clazón, founder of Movimiento Creativo, a movement artist from Argentina with 15 years devoted to somatics and movement. Her background spans hospitality, world travel, corporate environments, ontological coaching, and teaching yoga, dance, and mindfulness. Since relocating to San Francisco in 2020, she has deepened studies in eco somatics and conscious movement, drawing from nature, poetry, and shamanic influences. She brings music into every experience with playlists that echo natural cycles and shares her work in diverse settings, from women’s circles and ceremonial dance to outdoor sessions and one-on-one coaching. Held at Green Yogi Telegraph. A trust-based sliding scale is available: Solidarity Ticket at $30 for those needing a reduced rate, Sustaining Ticket at $35 reflecting the true cost, and Reciprocity Ticket at $40 for participants able to contribute more to support wider access.

Jaap Blonk presents original pieces, spontaneous creations, and sound poems from earlier periods. Each month, the club chooses a classic mystery published before 1960 by noted authors such as Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Rex Stout, John Dickson Carr, Erle Stanley Gardner, Ngaio Marsh, Dashiell Hammett, Ellery Queen, and others.

Thursday evenings at Spire, the Church, bring a blend of yoga and goth aesthetics to life. A carefully chosen soundtrack of dark, atmospheric music guides the flow while participants move through poses. The practice is suitable for all levels, inviting newcomers and experienced yogis alike to build strength, stretch deeply, find calm, and spend time in personal reflection. The gathering emphasizes connection as much as movement. Those who appreciate both yoga and goth culture can meet others in a supportive, inclusive space that welcomes thoughtful community engagement. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Donations are accepted at the door through common payment apps such as Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle. Presales are available. A separate Sunday session is also offered each week. The venue is in a residential neighborhood, so respect for nearby residents is essential. Parking on the immediate street is very limited, so consider biking, carpooling, walking with friends, using rideshare, or taking public transit, and plan ahead. Experience a restorative sound healing workshop at Green Yogi Telegraph that explores theta brainwave states through a guided drum journey and a soothing sound bath with Phoenix Song. The journey continues with Native buffalo drumming that invites a non-ordinary state of consciousness where attendees can connect with personal guidance, receive insights, and seek answers to questions, followed by partner and small group sharing to clarify intentions and integrate the experience. This workshop welcomes all experience levels, from newcomers to seasoned practitioners. Comfortable clothing is recommended, and bringing a blanket or warm layer, a yoga mat, and water can enhance comfort. A limited number of mats and blankets are available on site. Tickets are $35. An informal artist talk and mixer with John Boychuk invites creatives to rethink what it means to build a fulfilling practice beyond the traditional studio to gallery route. Boychuk, an artist and public artist who also works as a strategic advisor, will guide a conversation about spotting possibilities in unexpected places, engaging with your community, translating lived experience into credibility, and forming connections that open new doors. The emphasis is on creative freedom, relationships, and the winding path an artist’s life can take, rather than personal branding or sales tactics. The discussion highlights how a portfolio can include both the work you make and the initiatives you set in motion. Attendees can bring questions, meet fellow artists, share current projects, and potentially connect with future collaborators, all while considering how the artist’s life and actions can itself be part of the work.

Operating independently required him to master more than recording, so he learned advertising, production, video, audience strategy, and creative technology by doing the work himself, then applied those skills to everything he creates, from fan experiences and app projects to brand collaborations treated as true creative partnerships. This milestone reflects a decade of shaping his sound, community, and story on his own terms.
