Bachata 4 Week Series Workshop in San Mateo!
Grow your bachata skills step by step in a four-week progressive workshop in San Mateo with Tristan and Rhazel. Each session builds on the last, giving you time to practice, ask questions, and fine-tune your technique so you develop stronger muscle memory, better connection, and more confidence on the social dance floor. Two levels are offered so you can start where you feel most comfortable. Level 1 focuses on social-dance foundations, including timing, footwork, body movement, frame, and essential partnerwork, and it welcomes complete beginners. Level 2 is designed for intermediate dancers and sharpens partnerwork, footwork, and musicality while working on smoother transitions, cleaner technique, styling, and social-floor confidence. No partner is required to attend. The series takes place at Motion Arts Center, with limited capacity to keep the experience focused. Originating in Melbourne’s late 1980s club scene alongside EDM, shuffle dance has since grown into a global presence at festivals and within dance communities. Known for its welcoming spirit, it encourages individuality, confidence, and expressive movement without judgment. In each class, Jasper teaches the essentials, including foundational steps, rhythm and musicality, coordination and timing, smooth transitions, and developing flow. Participants learn to connect movement to the beat while building confidence and personal style. Comfortable shoes and plenty of energy are all that is needed, and no prior experience is required. About Jasper: Raised in the Bay Area, he began dancing in 2009 through a high school hip hop club and later led the group, discovering a passion for teaching. In 2021, he performed with a team featured on Season 16 of America’s Got Talent, a milestone that led him to pursue dance professionally. He has since taught, competed, and performed across the United States and internationally, including appearances in Los Angeles, Seattle, Texas, Paris, and Jamaica. Specializing in shuffle dance and breakdancing, he brings an encouraging, community focused approach to every class.

At Spire Church in Oakland, Keri leads group mat Pilates with props, focusing on mobility, stability, strength and release. All experience levels and body types are welcome, with individualized modifications or extra challenges available as needed. Props are used to support or intensify the work, build proprioception, encourage closed chain movements and add carefully managed instability to awaken deep stabilizing muscles rather than relying on the big movers. The goal is to help participants understand their bodies more clearly, refine movement habits, address imbalances and develop a more efficient, mobile practice. The training is demanding and also enjoyable. Keri is a comprehensively trained Balanced Body instructor with experience across mat, springboard, chair, arc and reformer, and she continues advanced study in foot, gait and motor sensory training under the mentorship of Nancy Myers, along with ongoing education with master instructors including Briggit Brunner and Monique Convertito. She teaches in San Francisco and offers private sessions in Oakland. Pricing is sliding scale from $10 to $20, with a $15 suggested contribution. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. A playful, game-filled gathering presented by A Tribe Called Queer invites participants to tap into their inner child through movement and fun activities. The session is facilitated by Tanna Samone Hall, also known as Coach T. It takes place outdoors at Dimond Park in the open area beside Lions Pool, with nearby trees available for shade. A ticket is required for entry. Attendees are asked to wear tennis shoes and workout clothes or any attire that allows comfortable movement, and to bring a hat and sunblock. Seating is on the ground or at available park tables, so a picnic blanket is useful. Gender neutral public restrooms are available. Parking is offered in two nearby lots, including one next to Lions Pool. A scent free environment is preferred. This offering currently centers able bodied participants and is not able to accommodate disabled or differently abled people at this time. Those who are unable to attend and wish to support may donate instead. A Tribe Called Queer is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Jill Scott brings the To Whom This May Concern Tour to Paramount Theatre of the Arts for a phone-free concert experience. Phones and recording devices, including smart glasses, are not allowed in the performance space. Designated phone use areas inside the venue are available if access is needed during the event, and devices must be re-secured in the pouch before reentering the performance area. Anyone using a non-permitted device during the show will be escorted out. For purchases inside the venue, guests are encouraged to bring a credit card. Upon arrival, devices and related accessories will be placed in Yondr pouches that remain with their owners and are unlocked at the end of the show. Guests keep possession of their items and can access their phones in designated Phone Use Areas inside the venue, then resecure them before returning to the auditorium. Anyone using a non-permitted device during the performance will be escorted out. A credit card is recommended for purchases at the venue. Following these guidelines helps maintain a focused, device-free experience for all attendees.
