Poetry Reading: Nancy Miller Gomez & Adela Najarro

Annieglass, 310 Harvest Dr, Watsonville · verified Jul 31
    See details

A special Second Sábado poetry reading spotlights Santa Cruz County Poet Laureate Nancy Miller Gomez alongside Adela Najarro, a Latinx poet whose work has earned awards. Nancy’s poems have appeared in Best American Poetry, Best New Poets, and many other journals and anthologies. She received a Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets and a special mention in the Pushcart Prize anthology, and Ellen Bass has praised her voice for its hard-earned compassion and wisdom and for the way it blends memory with ferocity. Nancy also co-founded an organization that brings poetry into jails and offers workshops for marginalized youth in the county. Adela’s fifth collection, Variations in Blue, was published in 2025 through the Letras Latinas and Red Hen collaborative. The California Arts Council recognized her as an established artist in the Central California Region and named her an Individual Artist Fellow. With family roots in Nicaragua, she serves as Board President of Círculo de Poetas and Writers and collaborates with Latinx communities nationwide to connect creative writing with social justice. Wine and refreshments will be available, with time to mingle and a Q&A where attendees can ask both poets about their writing and their efforts to bring poetry to marginalized communities. Seating is limited and offered on a first come basis.

Fun Dive Monastery Beach 8/9/26 (Advanced)

    Monastery Beach, 27900 CA-1, Carmel-by-the-Sea · verified Aug 2
    See details

Tri-Valley Dive Club is hosting a fun shore dive at Monastery Beach, a striking Monterey Peninsula site favored by experienced divers. Sitting alongside the deep Carmel Submarine Canyon, it features rugged underwater terrain, reef structure, kelp, and the chance to encounter native marine life when conditions cooperate. This is an advanced dive. The steep, pebbly slope, shifting footing, shore break, and surge can make entries and exits strenuous, so divers should be comfortable with cold-water shore diving and managing equipment in active surf. Plans are dependent on weather, swell, and wave conditions. Safety comes first, and the dive will proceed here only if the ocean allows. If the surf is unfavorable, the outing may relocate to an alternate site. Plan to arrive with enough time to unload, assemble your gear, and be ready for the briefing. Bring full cold-water equipment, suitable exposure protection, and anything else needed for a safe and enjoyable day in the water. RSVP or arrange a PADI Professional guide through Dive N Trips at 925-462-7234 or info@diventrips.com.

    Masters of Hawaiian Music

SJZ Break Room, 310 S 1st St, San Jose · verified Aug 2
    See details

Masters of Hawaiian Music unites four-time Grammy recipient George Kahumoku Jr., six-time Grammy winner Daniel Ho, and two-time Grammy winner Tia Carrere for a performance of slack key guitar, ukulele, and traditional songs shared with audiences around the world. Kahumoku, a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Award honoree and a versatile artist, vocalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher, sculptor, and farmer, produces the long-running weekly Slack Key Show on Maui. His music is rooted in traditions that trace to the early 1800s, when Portuguese arrivals introduced the ukulele and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to Hawai‘i along with ranching practices. Multi-instrumentalist Daniel Ho earned four of his six Grammys as producer of Kahumoku’s wins, showcasing his range on ukulele, slack key guitar, piano, and vocals, and his remaining two Grammys came through collaborations with his close friend Tia Carrere. Carrere is an international star who first displayed her singing and acting in Wayne’s World, followed by notable film and television roles including Lilo & Stitch and Jo Koy’s Easter Sunday, and she returned to her Hawaiian roots with Grammy-winning albums created with Ho. Together, these artists celebrate cherished heritage, remarkable musicianship, and luminous compositions, with performances praised by PopMatters for capturing the spirit of aloha.
