This eight-session workshop series is designed for adults over 60 who are afraid of falling or have experienced a fall. Led by volunteer coaches from the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center, the evidence-based program helps participants build confidence, improve balance, increase activity, and reduce fall risk. Small group sessions cover simple balance and strength exercises, home safety tips, and techniques for addressing the fear of falling, supporting a well-rounded approach to staying safe and healthy at home and beyond. Travel back to the 1960s through a vibrant display of psychedelic posters from legendary venues in San Francisco’s South Bay. Authors Brian Conroy and Bill Guardino will talk about their book, South Bay Flashback, exploring the groundbreaking visual style and the rebellious, creative spirit that fueled the Bay Area rock and roll scene. Guardino attended his first rock concert at 14 and has spent more than 55 years building an expansive rock memorabilia collection that spans vinyl in multiple formats, posters, handbills, autographed photos, instruments, concert shirts, comics, magazines, and collectible toys. He continues to see as many shows as possible, especially Dead and Company, and this book is his first. Conroy is the author of eight books, including Shooting Stars and Blazing Guitars and I’m Just Sayin'. He taught theater and public speaking for 35 years in San Jose public schools and also taught storytelling at San José State University, and he wrote and directed the rock-themed musicals Hip Van Winkle, Revenge of the Flower Children, and Rock and Roll Must Die. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

She served as Invitee de Honor for Art du Pastel France in 2017, teaches widely in the United States and abroad, and has juried and judged numerous exhibitions. The artist will be present at the reception.

Stephany Buswell has spent about ten years in writers’ groups, which led to a memoir published in 2022. She is working on a second book that blends memoir and comedy, sharing stories of cake disasters and unusual situations. A retired pastry chef and former pastry chef instructor, she has made cakes for fifty years and now focuses on writing. Elbina Batala Rafizadeh is a published writer, poet, and Cal Poet teacher. Her first book of poetry was published in 2024, and she co-edited an anthology of peace poetry the same year. She has facilitated short story and poetry writing groups since 1997, is a member of the Writers of Color, is now semi-retired, and teaches one health class at West Valley Mission College. Her cultural heritage and experiences in the natural world inform her writing. This program occurs on third Thursdays from January through May and July through November, with no in-branch sessions in June or December.

Each date features a different band and caller, and calling will use Larks and Robins. Contra is a participatory folk dance arranged in long lines of couples moving through repeating figures.
