SUN 5/17/26 - SoCal RC Tank Club @ Huntington Beach, CA

The SoCal RC Tank Club brings radio controlled tank battles to Lake Huntington Dog Park, featuring infrared systems that simulate laser tag. Teams square off on detailed miniature battlefields with realistic props, competing until a single tank remains or an objective is achieved. Spectators and those curious about the hobby are welcome to observe. Returning members should arrive prepared. Before coming, upgrade the IR receiver to a LegoDEI V2 or V4 or another approved unit, since V3 is not allowed. Make sure the IR emitter bulb is recessed by about 9 millimeters and confirm outdoors that the shot pattern registers hits only from the front arc. On the day, plan to get there early to help with setup, have tanks ready to run as soon as possible, check with Tang or Tommy for shoot and receiver compliance testing, and sign in with Steve or Andrew to handle club dues. To stay up and running, bring extra batteries, basic hand tools, and anything needed to keep both you and your tank going through the day. A second RC tank can be useful. Print Over Print (POP): Creative Overmarbling Class

A hands-on marbling intensive devoted to building layered prints on paper and fabric. Participants delve into color relationships, transparency versus opacity, and pattern planning to create intentional overlays with eye-catching results. With guidance from the teaching team, you will work on paper, cotton, and silk to develop designs that can be subtle or striking. The first day focuses on planning and laying base layers using a range of water marbling techniques, yielding up to 13 prints on A4 paper, cotton, and silk. This second-day session follows those plans to complete two-layer compositions that stand out. Instruction is offered in a small-group setting by co-founders Star and Phil Greenwood, and materials are provided for 13 or more finished pieces, including up to six sheets of A4 art paper, up to four cotton fat quarters or silk or cotton bandanas measuring 22 by 22 inches, and three silk or bamboo rayon scarves approximately 14 by 72 inches. If time allows on day two, participants may also add vintage scarves or other personal items. Best suited to intermediate and advanced marblers, and open to anyone who has previously painted with this team at least once.

OCC Planetarium welcomes the community for public shows featuring a rotating lineup of immersive full-dome experiences. Several club members have been meeting for midweek, long-distance training rides. The group has been choosing favorite weekend routes, along with some training rides from the Ride Banks. The pace is friendly and a bit slower, and they regroup for support.

2026 Pride

To honor Harvey Milk Day and Pride Month in June, the City of Irvine presents its fifth annual Pride celebration at the Civic Center Piazza. Highlights include a ceremonial raising of the Progress Flag at City Hall to affirm and support the LGBTQIA+ community. Attendees can look forward to refreshments, inclusive activities for all ages, and opportunities to discover valuable resources, make connections, and celebrate Pride.

Redneck Rodeo

Memorial Day weekend brings Tunes at the Dunes to Newport Dunes, where Redneck Rodeo, billed as America’s Country Band, performs live on the Back Bay beach. Admission is free and all ages are welcome, creating a relaxed, family-friendly setting by the water. Bring floats or beach chairs for comfort and enjoy country music with the bay as a backdrop. At the Bowers Museum’s Norma Kershaw Auditorium, guest curator Tara Miller opens an exploration of American quilts as records of commerce, industry, and community. Drawing on pieces from the exhibition, the talk highlights how a wool whole cloth from 1776 reflects boycotts and home production. Chintz appliqué follows cotton grown by enslaved people across the Atlantic to Britain and back again. Vivid greens tinted with arsenic illustrate how industrial chemistry broadened the quiltmaker’s color choices. Depression-era quilting bees organized through newspapers reveal how entrepreneurs and mass media reshaped quilt commerce in difficult years. Fabric from feed sacks conveys the hardships faced by sharecropping families in rural Alabama. A pictorial California quilt created in 1975 by nineteen women from Orange County embodies the Great Quilt Revival, restoring quilting as a creative, communal, and culturally meaningful art. This is a ticketed program with admission priced at $15 for members and $20 for the general public. Born and raised in Orange County, the seventeen-year-old second-degree black belt turned a life-altering adrenal gland tumor diagnosis in 2023 into creative drive, writing and recording The Fight’s Not Over Yet just days before an eight-hour surgery for a tumor her doctors believed was cancerous, a condition diagnosed in only 30 children in the United States each year. The experience deepened her commitment to supporting people facing cancer, a mission she pursues through a foundation and through her music. She has expressed gratitude for messages of encouragement from artists and athletes including Dionne Warwick, Billy Ray Cyrus, Firerose, Gladys Knight, Mike Tyson, Dianne Warren, Sofia Carson, Donnie McClurkin, young performers from Hits! The Musical, Brice Young, Trenton Irwin, and Alicia Newman, support that strengthened her resolve. With her debut EP 555 already released and more on the way, including Me Myself and I as her first single of 2026 and the launch of her next chapter, this performance presents a songwriter continually creating and moving forward.

pint nite XL (30 miles!!)

Tackle a 30 mile ride from Anaheim Hills to Corona Del Mar that blends bike paths, off road trails, and streets. The pace is relaxed and focused on enjoying the route, with planned stops for charging, food, and drinks along the way. The opening segment includes about 7 to 8 miles of intense off road terrain, and those who prefer to avoid that section can link up later at the first charging stop. This outing is for moderate to advanced riders and is not intended for beginners. Standard Pint boards are not allowed due to limited range. Pint X, XR, GT, e-bikes, and EUCs are welcome, and scooters should be capable of handling off road conditions. Expect foot fatigue over the distance and plan for a full day rather than a quick finish. Bringing swimwear is encouraged for a post-ride ocean dip. Some participants are staging cars at the beach to help with rides back. Charging guidance: Pint X or Pint S requires a hypercharger, and a hypercharger is strongly recommended for GT S-series.

Print Over Print (POP): Creative Overmarbling Class

Explore creative overmarbling on paper and fabric in this Day 2 session, an alternate option focused on completing a second-layer design. Building on plans developed in the first day, participants create intentional overlays that stand out while working with color relationships, the interplay of transparent and opaque paints, and pattern techniques for precise results. With guidance from the instructors, students produce designs on paper, cotton, and silk that range from subtle to striking. The fee includes tax, small-group instruction from co-founders Star and Phil Greenwood, and all materials to complete at least 13 wearable or display-ready pieces. Provided supplies include up to six sheets of A4 art paper, up to four cotton fat quarters measuring 18 by 22 inches or silk or cotton bandanas measuring 22 by 22 inches, and three scarves in silk or bamboo rayon measuring 14 by 72 inches. As time allows on Day 2, participants may also bring vintage scarves or other items to paint. Best for intermediate and advanced marblers, and open to anyone who has painted with these instructors at least once.

At the Jackson Hole Birding Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Indigenous leader Lisa Marie Ansell Frazier shares Birds, Bison, and Belonging, a program that connects prairie restoration with the resurgence of birds and buffalo. Drawing on Indigenous ecological knowledge, seventh-generation stewardship, and direct work in bison restoration, she traces how healthier food systems and renewed relationships with land can revive culture and community. Through stories from the Buffalo Youth Nation Project, the talk highlights birds as markers of prairie well-being and views the return of buffalo as a sign of healing across land, foodways, and people. The conversation reimagines conservation as an act of remembering our reciprocal ties to place, with an emphasis on ecological, cultural, and spiritual balance for the generations to come. The Rooted in Flavor series returns to Palette Dim Sum for an evening that pairs a ten course menu with thoughtful dialogue about the history and ongoing evolution of Asian American culinary identity. Seating is limited, creating an intimate setting for conversation and cuisine. The night begins with a lounge reception that includes one cocktail or mocktail, moves into a seated dinner and presentation with a glass of wine, and concludes with dessert alongside guided conversations, with time afterward for optional networking in the lounge. Special guests include Joey Ng, founder of Palette Dim Sum, and Anthony Shu, a food and culture writer and researcher. Palette Dim Sum is a modern Cantonese restaurant from the Ng family, the team behind Koi Palace and Dragon Beaux. 2026 Reines Lecture featuring Nobel Laureate Dr. Adam Riess

At Irvine Barclay Theatre, the Reines Lecture Series hosts Nobel Laureate Dr. Adam Riess for a public talk on the evolving story of cosmic expansion and the puzzle of dark energy. Building on Edwin Hubble’s 1929 finding that space is stretching, and using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, Dr. Riess explains how his team identified that the expansion is speeding up, what the evidence shows, and why pinning down the nature of dark energy remains one of the biggest open questions in astrophysics and cosmology. He will also share recent results indicating that the universe continues to challenge current predictions. Dr. Riess is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor and the Thomas J. Barber Professor at Johns Hopkins University, a distinguished astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His research uses supernovae and Cepheid variables to refine the cosmic distance scale and the Hubble constant, and he leads the SHOES collaboration alongside the Higher-z effort to discover and study very distant Type Ia supernovae that illuminate the origin of cosmic acceleration. His contributions include a leading role in the High-z Supernova Search Team that revealed the accelerating universe, work recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 and honors such as the Albert Einstein Medal, a MacArthur Fellowship, the Gruber Cosmology Prize, and the Shaw Prize. The Reines Lecture Series honors Frederick Reines, founding dean of physical sciences at UC Irvine and co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize for the discovery of the neutrino. The annual program invites prominent physicists and astronomers to campus for a public lecture and a department colloquium.

Friday Night Sand Flag Football in Newport Beach 🏈🌊

Kick off the weekend on the sand with a coed flag football league in Newport Beach. The focus is friendly competition, fresh ocean air, and a welcoming social vibe for players of every experience level. Players can join on their own, link up as a small group, or bring a full roster of 12 or more to represent their squad. The season spans nine weeks with seven regular season games followed by one to two weeks of playoffs for qualifying teams. Games are played 8 on 8 with two 20 minute halves, and at least three players of each gender are on the field at all times. Divisions are organized by skill level at league discretion. Referees are provided with no extra fees, and photographers are onsite most weeks. Players who register by Opening Night receive Dri-Fit team shirts. Division winners take home trophies, prizes, and championship belts. NEW Friday Night Sand Volleyball in Irvine 🏐🌙

A new sand volleyball league is launching at the Irvine Great Park Sand Volleyball Courts, created in response to strong demand from an already sold-out program. It offers a relaxed, social atmosphere where players can stay active, meet new people, and play under the lights. Registration is flexible. Individuals can sign up and be placed on a team, small groups may enroll separately with efforts made to keep friends together, and full teams of five or more can secure a roster. Competition uses a coed 4-on-4 format that requires at least two women on the court. The season spans eight weeks and includes seven regular matches, with playoffs for teams that qualify. Nets, boundary lines, and balls are provided, and teams are encouraged to bring their own volleyballs for warm-ups. A photographer will capture action at multiple games. Players who complete registration by the first night receive Dri-Fit team shirts. Second Edition of the Intercultural Voices Film Festival

The second edition of the Intercultural Voices Film Festival in Los Angeles is accepting submissions for an international showcase dedicated to storytelling that connects cultures and amplifies underrepresented perspectives. Created with the belief that cinema can bridge differences and spark understanding, the festival highlights intercultural experiences and welcomes hybrid narratives. The inaugural year featured films from more than thirty countries and inspired audiences with moments of laughter, tears, and meaningful conversation. Filmmakers can submit narrative features and shorts, documentary features and shorts, animation, hybrid works, and new media or emerging forms. Projects by women or centered on women’s themes are encouraged, and student films are also welcome. Works that explore cultural identity, migration, belonging, and the intersections of language, memory, and imagination are a strong fit. Several submission windows are offered, including an early period with reduced entry fees, followed by regular, late, and extended deadlines, with notifications sent ahead of the event. The festival provides a platform for cross-cultural stories in Los Angeles.

The season spans eight weeks with seven regular season matchups and a playoff week for qualifying teams. Games are 6v6 with two 20 minute halves. Tex-Mex All-Star Revue w/ Texas Tornados Tradition

Campus JAX hosts a Tex-Mex All-Star Revue featuring the Texas Tornados Tradition, led by original Tornados veterans Louie Ortega and Michael Guerra. The story reaches back to Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet, whose evolution into the Texas Tornados united Sahm with Freddy Fender, Flaco Jiménez and Augie Meyers. Their border-bred blend of Texas and Mexican influences, what Sahm called conjunto rock, fused rock, country, blues and Tejano with a punchy backbeat and memorable Spanglish hooks heard in songs like Hey, Baby, Que Paso, Guacamole and Adios Mexico. Highlights of that legacy include a Grammy for Best Mexican American Performance, appearances at a presidential inauguration and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and a single, A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada, featured in the film Tin Cup. For this revue, Ortega and Guerra appear with James Intveld on bass, Kip Dabbs on drums and Carl Byron on keyboards, with selections that also salute the Mavericks and other roots favorites. The evening begins with Los Fabulocos, a seasoned outfit known for its Cali-Mex Roots Rock sound and led by accordionist Jesse Cuevas alongside Mike Molina. The season spans eight weeks with seven matches plus playoffs for qualifying teams. Play follows a coed 4-on-4 format with at least two women on the court. Each matchup is best two out of three to 21 using rally scoring with a cap at 25. Multiple divisions make it easy to find the right fit, including an added early option for beginner to intermediate players, a beginner Party Division with rotating evening game times, and a Premier Division for intermediate players with rotating evening game times. Those in the regular evening divisions will not be placed in the early division. Equipment is covered, with nets, boundary lines, and balls provided. A photographer captures the action for several weeks. Players registered by Opening Night receive Dri-Fit team shirts, and top teams and standout players earn trophies and medals. O: Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve Newcomer Hike

Set out on an easygoing, mostly flat five mile hike that lasts about three hours and welcomes newcomers. Take in the natural beauty of Bolsa Chica, homeland of the Acjachemen and Tongva peoples, a rare remaining coastal wetland in Southern California. Each visit offers fresh sights and learning opportunities. Leaders share insights on local history, birds, plants, geology, and community issues, and participants often add their own knowledge. Guest speakers are welcome. Bring a camera, water, sun protection, a hat, and light hiking boots. This outing continues even in rainy weather. As an ecological reserve, dogs and drones are not allowed, and there are no restrooms. Street parking is available and arriving early is recommended. Minors may attend with a parent.

Kick off the celebration early with an informal pre-beach party soirée for Marina High School alumni from every graduating year. Reconnect with classmates the night before the 17th Annual Marina All Years Alumni Beach Party in a reserved area that offers bar service and food, pool tables, and a jukebox ready for 80s favorites. Everyone covers their own food and drinks. Free parking is available. Seating in the reserved section is limited, so please RSVP by indicating you are going and plan to arrive early.

2026 Californians for Nebraska Annual Picnic

Californians for Nebraska presents its annual picnic at Mason Regional Park, with the grill going and plenty of food for everyone. Cornhole and other casual games will be available for friendly competition. A fundraising opportunity drawing supports the Scholarship Fund, and the grand prize is two tickets to a home Husker football game. Attendees marked as going on the Facebook event receive one complimentary raffle ticket at check in, and additional tickets can be purchased on site. Classic rock fills the air at Baja Bar and Grill inside the OC Fair grounds. The focus is classic rock music in a bar and grill setting within the fairgrounds.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Summer Camp ($249/week)

Coopers hosts a Pokémon Trading Card Game summer camp where kids can enjoy their favorite Pokémon while exploring a dynamic hobby in a safe, structured, and welcoming setting. Campers learn to build their own decks, understand official rules, and apply real math skills such as calculating damage and thinking about probability during play. With coached gameplay and short tournaments, participants strengthen critical thinking, strategic planning, and decision-making in a fun and supportive environment. Above all, Pokémon becomes a shared language that helps campers make friends, grow confidence, and connect through a hobby they love. Early drop off and late pick up are included. Designed for ages 7 to 15. Tuition is $249 per week. Tuesday Night Dance: Hip Hop

Experience a hip hop session that spotlights rhythm, musicality, and your unique style. Build a foundation with essential grooves and learn new combinations in a welcoming, high energy setting. The class is designed for both beginners and experienced dancers, with lots of movement and plenty of fun. Instruction is led by Sakina Ibrahim, founder of the Dance Arts Academy Foundation, a dance program in Orange County and Los Angeles that offers a wide variety of classes, including Creative Movement, Hip Hop, Latin, and Ballet Folklorico. Her background includes intensive study at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, the Bates Dance Festival, and Broadway Dance Center, along with immersive cultural training at the Dagbe Cultural Arts Center in Ghana.
