    Funny Bones: A Trombone Summit

Campus JAX, 3950 Campus Dr, Newport Beach · verified Aug 2
    See details

Funny Bones: A Trombone Summit brings together a circle of trombonists connected through years of study, bands, mentorship, recording, and friendship. Conceived by Matthew Elton Smith, widely recognized as a drummer, educator, and bandleader whose earliest musical path began on trombone, the concert reflects his journey from intensive study on the instrument to earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Drum Set from CalArts and building a career across Southern California. The program highlights the trombone community as much as individual artistry. Joey Sellers, a decorated jazz educator and composer and Director of Jazz Studies at Saddleback College, appears as a guiding influence whose accolades include the Gil Evans Fellowship, the Sammy Nestico Award, and multiple national commissions. Abdullah Ebrahim contributes a blend of classical clarity and contemporary improvisation shaped by studies at California State University Northridge and the University of North Texas, along with performances with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Los Angeles native and new dad Steven Robinson adds a far-reaching resume that spans international touring with John Fogerty, Grammy-winning recording projects, and daily performances at Disneyland with The Straw Hatters, reflecting a career that crosses jazz, commercial music, education, and studio work. Bob Lawrence, a sought-after trombonist, arranger, and educator and former student of Sellers, brings a powerful voice rooted in jazz and Latin music with credits that include Poncho Sanchez, Luis Enrique, and the Latin Grammy-nominated Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra. Bass trombonists Robert Todd and Rose Doylemason round out the brass. Todd’s low-brass work extends from jazz bands and symphony orchestras to brass ensembles, video game music groups, and polka bands. Doylemason’s background includes orchestras, brass quintets, jazz ensembles, and chamber groups across the country. Together they showcase the instrument’s remarkable range. A rhythm section of inventive Southern California musicians supports the summit. Pianist Sam Ross, a Long Beach based composer and DownBeat Award recipient, offers a modern touch and deep jazz vocabulary. Bassist Cole Sainburg brings a perspective shaped by jazz alongside Armenian folk and traditional Japanese music and is active as an educator. At the drums is Matthew Elton Smith, a performer, composer, recording artist, and educator whose connections help anchor the gathering. At its heart, this concert celebrates mentorship, friendship, and shared history, honoring the trombone’s human voice with moments of humor, lyricism, power, and surprise. It nods to tradition while looking toward the future of jazz.

    The Kellogg House Ghost Tour

Heritage Museum of Orange County, 3001 W Harvard St, Santa Ana · verified Aug 7
    See details

At the Heritage Museum of Orange County, this ghost-focused tour explores the Kellogg House, built in 1898 by Hiram Clay Kellogg. Following the death of his first wife, he created a grand residence as a gift for his second wife, Helen. Drawing on his passion for tall ships, he designed a three story spiral staircase that curls around a central mast and rises to a crow’s nest that seems to have no base. The narrative traces Hiram’s death in 1921 and Helen’s 42 additional years in the home, concluding with her passing there. Today, reports of puzzling occurrences hint that members of the Kellogg family may still be present, setting the tone for a tour that weaves together distinctive architecture, family history, and accounts of unexplained activity.
