Live music in Newport Beach, CA

Los Angeles-based drummer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and bandleader Shane Sato brings a set rooted in modern jazz with touches of soul and R&B to Campus JAX in Costa Mesa. Leading a tight five-piece made up of standout Southern California players, he features music from his latest album, Wavelength, on Mixto Records. The record blends open-ended improvisation, deep grooves, and melodic storytelling to explore connection and the shared frequencies that link people, with collaborations from Braxton Cook, Reuben James, and Nao Yoshioka. Born and raised in Yorba Linda, Sato returns to Orange County for his debut at Campus JAX. A Japanese-American artist who leads from behind the drums, he grew up in the local jazz community, earned the Steamers & Friends of Jazz High School Scholarship, and has built an independent catalog with millions of streams, including tracks featured on Spotify playlists such as Fresh Finds Jazz, Morning Rhythm, and Jazzy Beats. A community-focused Brazilian Zouk gathering that begins with an open level class taught by Marissa Rivera, suitable for everyone and no partner is required, then flows into a social with music from DJ Amastrus, DJ Viktor, and a special guest. Birthday rodas and a performance add to the celebration. Guests may bring snacks, and light refreshments will be provided. Held at Vivid Movement in Costa Mesa. Pricing is $30 in advance or $35 at the door. A carpool discount is available for those traveling from San Diego.

La Casa presents Orangewood Rocks, a live music night at the Lido Theatre with performances by M Street and The Burritos. General admission is $60 and seating is first come, first seated. A popcorn and a soda are included with every ticket, and alcohol service will be available for purchase. There will also be opportunity tickets for prizes and a 50/50 split the pot cash drawing. Ticket purchases and donations support children served by the Orangewood Children & Family Center, funding educational outings, enjoyable activities, and essential personal items for kids in care. Attacca Quartet launches the season with a program that places Beethoven in conversation with the composers he continues to inspire. Recognized for clarity, rhythmic drive, and adventurous choices, the ensemble pairs Beethoven’s Op. 131, a late quartet prized for its seamless arc and introspective depth, with music by Caroline Shaw, Paul Wiancko, and Radiohead. Heard side by side, these works highlight connections that bridge centuries of musical ideas. In this setting, Beethoven’s voice emerges as immediate and alive. As an opening statement for the season, the concert presents Beethoven as both a starting point and a continuing force.
