Club Cali, 2355 Telegraph Ave, Berkeley · verified Aug 2
    See details

FloLab pushes back against the gentrification of Bay Area Hip Hop, creating a weekly home where MCs still hone their craft, the crowd’s voice counts, and the culture stays with the people. Each week, artists, writers, listeners, and the community gather for a $300 rap writing contest with open mic energy in a room built on substance, style, and truth. You do not have to rap to be part of it, as guests are welcome to watch, vibe, and connect with a community determined to keep real Hip Hop rooted in the Bay. Contestants check Instagram for the current topic and beats, register in advance on the website, and read the full rules. Write one verse for each beat, with hooks or choruses allowed, and memorizing verses can strengthen a performance. Win the crowd to win the money. Prizes are $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. People come for genuine culture, a growing Bay Area community, weekly themes that reflect real life, a space for MCs to build, test, sharpen, and perform, and an audience that truly cares. The organizers are also working toward expansion into San Francisco and San Jose and welcome monthly donors to help sustain and grow the movement.
