    Euge Groove

Yoshi's Oakland -Jack London square, 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland · verified Oct 4
    See details

Veteran saxophonist Euge Groove returns to Yoshi's Oakland with a revitalized spirit shaped by his upcoming album The Phoenix. After a serious health crisis paused his touring, he steps back into the spotlight at the very place where a previous set was cut short, a night when his band kept the music flowing with R&B covers and the crowd's support never wavered. Strength regained and accompanied everywhere by his cardiac-alert service dog, Odysseus, he brings the soulful saxophone voice that has long animated concert and festival stages. A dynamic performer and studio craftsman, he has toured both as a headliner and alongside artists such as Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, and Tower of Power. His catalog includes chart favorites like Born 2 Groove, Religify, Sunday Morning, and House of Groove, along with signature tunes Livin' Large and Slow Jam. During recovery he stayed deeply creative, producing for peers including Richard Elliot and Carol Albert and expanding his mixing and mastering work for artists like George Benson, Rick Braun, Peter White, Vincent Ingala, Norman Brown, and Mindi Abair. Inspired by the myth of renewal that gives The Phoenix its name, this performance offers an intimate night of smooth jazz at Yoshi's Oakland from an artist channeling perseverance into melody.

Spire the Church, 825 Athens Ave, Oakland · verified Oct 2
    See details

An hour-long group mat Pilates session led by Keri takes place at Spire Church on Wednesday evenings, welcoming all levels and all bodies. The class emphasizes mobility, stability, strength, and release work, and participants receive tailored modifications or added challenges to suit their needs. Props are used to support or intensify movements and to build proprioception, creating closed chain patterns and, when appropriate, unstable surfaces that engage deep stabilizing muscles rather than relying only on the larger movers. The goal is to help participants better understand their own movement, identify imbalances, and retrain toward healthier, more efficient patterns. This offering typically runs on Wednesdays except the third week of the month. It is presented on a sliding scale of $10 to $20 with a suggested $15 donation, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Donations can be made at the door via common payment apps. The venue is in a residential neighborhood, so respect for neighbors is essential. Parking close to the building is limited, so consider biking, carpooling, walking, public transit, or rideshare, and allow extra time if you plan to drive.

FloLab - Weekly Rap Contest and Cypher

Club Cali, 2355 Telegraph Ave, Berkeley · verified Oct 2
    See details

FloLab was created to push back against the gentrification of Hip Hop in the Bay Area at a time when genuine culture spaces have been displaced, diluted, or priced out and replaced by rooms that imitate the look without the people, politics, struggle, skill, and community that built it. It offers a consistent home for authentic Bay Area Hip Hop where MCs sharpen their writing, the audience truly matters, and stewardship of the culture remains with the people. Each week it brings together artists, writers, listeners, and neighbors for a $300 rap writing contest alongside open mic energy, all rooted in substance, style, and truth. The space welcomes performers as well as those who want to watch and vibe, and it continues to grow a community unwilling to let Bay Area Hip Hop be colonized. Contest guidelines keep the focus on craft. Topics and beats are posted on Instagram, competitors write one verse for each beat with hooks or choruses allowed, memorized verses strengthen a set, and crowd response decides who takes the money. Cash prizes go to the top three performers, with $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. People are drawn to the authenticity, the growing Bay Area community, weekly topics that reflect real life, and a place where MCs can build, test, refine, and perform in front of an audience that cares. The movement is also working toward expansion into San Francisco and San Jose with support from monthly donors committed to sustaining real Hip Hop spaces in the Bay.

Pablo later joined on drums in Buenos Aires, and the trio set out touring. Years of shows at grassroots venues across the UK and Europe brought enthusiastic support from audiences and rock media. Their set leans on original songs that balance melody and bite, played with focus and feeling, and their work has been recommended by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music. Their tight-knit approach reflects a belief in collective creativity over individualism. Drifting Sand adds surfpop from San Francisco, while The Swamp Lights bring rock from Pacifica.

Tom Conneely - Live at Sailing Goat

Sailing Goat, 1900 Stenmark Dr, Richmond · verified Oct 4
    Free

Tom Conneely brings a solo performance to Sailing Goat at Point San Pablo Harbor. As the singer and guitarist leading Tom Conneely & Birds of Paradise, the San Francisco project behind the debut album Cappuccino Springs and the home-recorded follow up Sun Child, he draws on a body of work shaped by wide West Coast touring and a notable appearance at Reno’s Offbeat Festival. The band is a collaboration between Conneely and bassist Alois Cerbu, who tracked and engineered Sun Child and the forthcoming New Kind Palace themselves. New Kind Palace builds on that evolution, blending warm analog textures with inventive electronic touches and impressionistic lyrics, with a hypnotic current that nods to Arthur Russell and the lo-fi melodicism of The Cleaners of Venus. Much of the material grew out of sessions in bedrooms and other makeshift rooms, much of it captured on quarter inch tape, reflecting a process centered on honesty, experimentation, and facing inner turbulence alongside moments of clarity. Admission is free.

Concert: Maya de Vitry and Mark Erelli

Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar St, Berkeley · verified Oct 4
    See details

This concert features singer songwriter Maya de Vitry with an opening set from Mark Erelli. Raised in the rolling hills of Lancaster County and now based in Nashville, de Vitry began as a fiddler and has grown into a writer whose voice balances tenderness and strength. Her songs travel from canyons and kitchens to cold lakes and highway truck stops, weaving together joy, sorrow, and unflinching honesty. The stories can span hungover bachelorettes in the Nashville airport to reflections on the confines of our own adaptations, all rooted in a belief in the power of song to change us. De Vitry first came to prominence with The Stray Birds, releasing four full-length albums and two EPs while touring for seven years across the United States, Canada, and Europe. She launched her solo work with Adaptations in 2019, followed by How to Break a Fall, Violet Light, The Only Moment, the EP Infinite, and a run of singles. Her fifth album, All My Faith, embraces the spontaneity of live performance and a truth-seeking lyrical focus. Recorded and mixed by five time Grammy winner Sean Sullivan and self produced, it brings together a close circle of collaborators on her Mad Maker Studio label. Mark Erelli opens with a distinctive blend of rock, folk, and Americana, pairing lyrical depth with intricate instrumentation. His career includes collaborations with Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, and Anaïs Mitchell, opening slots with Marc Cohn, Watchhouse, and Josh Ritter, fourteen solo albums and three with the bluegrass band Barnstar!, and production work on two records for Grammy winning artist Lori McKenna.

    See details

Creative Movement is a somatic, meditative dance practice that nurtures embodied awareness and genuine expression. Guided musical journeys and intentional activation of the body support a gradual awakening of sensation, emotional understanding, and intuitive clarity. This is not a choreography class. It offers a structured yet flexible container where movement becomes inquiry, and rhythm, breath, and presence help illuminate how participants relate to themselves, to others, and to the moment at hand. Open to anyone curious about movement as a path to self-awareness, creativity, and emotional integration, this class welcomes all levels and requires no prior dance experience. It is especially supportive for those wishing to reconnect with their bodies, release stress, and explore authentic expression in a safe and welcoming environment. A typical session begins with arrival and grounding through gentle guidance, breath awareness, and whole-body activation. The heart of the experience unfolds as a movement journey with curated music and simple prompts that invite exploration of rhythm and sensation. The closing period focuses on slowing down, integrating the experience, and reflecting. The opening and ending are gently guided, while the middle offers spacious time for personal exploration within a held, supportive space. Participants often leave with a deeper connection to their bodies and inner awareness, practical tools for regulating the nervous system through movement and breath, greater emotional clarity and self-trust, and renewed creative freedom. The intention is to strengthen the capacity to show up fully embodied, rooted in personal wisdom, aligned with inner truth, and confident in creative expression. All are welcome. Facilitated by Magalí Clazón, founder of Movimiento Creativo, a movement artist from Argentina with 15 years devoted to somatics and movement. RAQS SHAKTI - Feminine Somatic Dance & Embodiment · New Moon Gathering

980 Linda Mar Blvd, Pacifica · verified Oct 4
    See details

Immerse in a 75-minute guided movement experience for women designed to shift attention from performance to sensation. Drawing from feminine movement, somatic exploration, dance, breath, music, and ideas rooted in yogic philosophy and the chakra system, this gathering centers on Root... the body’s relationship with ground, weight, instinct, stability, and belonging. There are no mirrors, no corrections, and no choreography to memorize. The session begins with a brief look at the longstanding connection between movement, ritual, and embodied meditation, then ties the theme to the subtle-body system and the Root Chakra. From there, the practice warms the body and invites awareness into the feet, legs, and pelvis, deepening contact with the floor as guided prompts gradually open into freer exploration. Expect spirals and waves, repetition and quiet, shaking, stomping, softness, heaviness, pauses, and perhaps even a roar. Movements may feel feminine, raw, unfamiliar, or hardly like dance at all, which is part of the process. The focus is not on how movement looks. The inquiry asks what unfolds when the body leads before the mind decides how it should appear.

    Mediterranean Movement

DanzHaus / The Gingerbread House, 1275 Connecticut St, San Francisco · verified Oct 2
    See details

Move to the rhythms of the Mediterranean with Monica in a live, monthly class at DanzHaus / The Gingerbread House. Held on second Saturdays, this welcoming session blends dance and music study with cultural context, inviting participants to deepen their folk and artistic practice in a supportive studio setting. Monica draws on over three decades of experience in Egyptian, Arab, and southern Italian movement and musical traditions. Expect abundant music from those regions, opportunities to create rhythms or songs for one another, and occasional collaborations with visiting musicians. Each gathering is unique, yet connected by ongoing themes that evolve from month to month. Classes are guided by music and are highly interactive. Participants warm up, explore full-body movement through directed exercises, try improvisational prompts and short combinations, learn in cultural context, dance together in a circle, and finish with a cool down. Choreography is minimal so there is room to cultivate personal style, instincts, and confidence. Dancers from many backgrounds can enrich their practice, and everyone leaves feeling more connected to their body. This experience suits people who want to work with intention and cultural grounding, who are drawn to the dance and music of Egypt and southern Italy, who want structure for technique, and who wish to get comfortable improvising, clapping or drumming for others, or singing as part of the exchange. It is not a straight belly dance or tarantella class, though elements of both appear within a broader, clearly defined framework. The approach prioritizes honoring distinctions among related traditions and the migrations that carry them, keeping practices vibrant without blending them into a single form or placing ourselves at the center. Plan to arrive a little early to settle in, meet classmates, and sign in. The studio is up one flight of stairs and has no elevator. There is ample street parking, and the location is near the 19 and 48 MUNI lines with connections to BART. Sliding scale pricing is available at $15, $20, or $25 per class. Paying in advance is appreciated, and early arrival door payment is accepted with exact cash or Venmo. Please note that refunds and make-up classes are not offered.
