Resilience and Reconstruction: The Armistice Period in the Ottoman Empire

Fresno · Smittcamp Alumni House, 2625 E Matoian Way

A two-day international conference at the Smittcamp Alumni House brings scholars together to examine resilience and reconstruction during the Armistice period in the Ottoman world. Organized by Prof. Barlow Der Mugrdechian and Dr. Ümit Kurt, and sponsored by the Armenian Studies Program at Fresno State, the gathering explores law, property, displacement, and community rebuilding across multiple regions. The program opens with a keynote by Nora Barakat of Stanford University, who reconsiders the Armistice era through legal frameworks, questions of ownership, and the politics of reconstruction from Anatolia to Palestine. The first panel, moderated by Ümit Kurt, features Merih Erol of Özyegin University on the postwar revival of Armenian communities in Greece, Hratch Kestenian of the Orient-Institut in Beirut on Armenian physicians and medical unions reshaping a transimperial profession between 1918 and 1923, and İsmail Keskin of the University of Crete on conversion practices used as bureaucratic protection during the population exchange. The second panel, moderated by Barlow Der Mugrdechian, includes Adrien Zakar of the University of Toronto on Tell Armen-Koçhisar, Kızıltepe, and the challenges of return from 1918 to 1925, Ani Ohanian of Clark University on how formal peace and geopolitical reordering prolonged violence and led to the loss of Armenia from 1918 to 1923, Kent Schull of Binghamton University on Joseph Booth and the flight of the Mormon-Armenian community from Aintab to Aleppo after the Armenian Genocide and the end of World War I, and Matthieu Rey of the Centre de Recherche Historique with a local history of the Armistice. The third panel, moderated by David Zakarian, brings together Arda Ekşigil, an independent researcher in Istanbul, on competition for Armenian property in early republican Istanbul, Şahika Karatepe of Binghamton University on survival and structural violence in Bardizag after 1915, Diana Hayapetyan of Clark University on theorizing return within Armenian Genocide studies, and Ümit Kurt of the University of Newcastle and IEA in Nantes, France on the fate of Armenian and Greek properties after the First World War. Across its keynote and panels, the conference offers a comparative, multi-sited view of the Armistice years, highlighting legal change, community endurance, and the contested ownership of land and homes from Greece to Anatolia, Palestine, Aleppo, Istanbul, and Bardizag.

    Pablo Cruise

Fresno · Tower Theatre, 815 E Olive Ave

Pablo Cruise brings its signature blend of grounded vocals and catchy, elegant grooves to Tower Theatre. The group introduced itself in 1975 with a self-titled A&M debut whose cover, photographed in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, prominently featured a huge gorilla while the musicians stayed out of view, adding to the band’s early mystique. Founding members include David Jenkins on guitar and vocals, Cory Lerios on keyboards and vocals, Bud Cockerel on bass and vocals, and Steve Price on drums and percussion. The name reflects the music’s spirit, with Pablo representing an honest, down to earth character and Cruise capturing a fun, easygoing outlook. Across the decade that followed, the band toured widely in the United States, Canada, and Japan, earned top 10 success with Whatcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye and Love Will Find A Way, and achieved several other top 20 placements while selling several million records. Recognized as respected writers and performers, they appeared on American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show, and The Dinah Shore Hour. In 1979 they surpassed Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Sahara Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, becoming the first rock band to play a casino showroom, and they were also the first rock group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. After seven studio albums and numerous national tours, they began a hiatus in 1985 that lasted nearly twenty years. The band has long emphasized that hearing the songs live offers a different dimension than the recordings, highlighting the upbeat, infectious spirit at the core of Pablo Cruise.
