Featured films include Obsession (R, 109 minutes, Horror, 2026), where Baron Bear Bailey shatters a novelty charm to compel his coworker Nikki Freeman’s affection, only to trigger a violent fixation that traps him in a nightmare. The Maltese Falcon (Approved, 100 minutes, 1941) follows a San Francisco private investigator drawn into the hunt for a priceless 16th century statuette after his partner is killed during what seemed like a routine tail. Dumb and Dumber (PG-13, 107 minutes, Comedy, 1994) tracks a dimwitted limo driver and his equally clueless friend on a cross country road trip to Aspen to return a forgotten briefcase. Super 8 (PG-13, 112 minutes, Sci-Fi, 2011) is set in 1979 as a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate the unexplained events that follow in their small town. On most days, the Central Library underground garage offers up to two hours of free parking with validation, and rates or special event pricing may apply beyond that.

SoCal Jeep picnic Sat August 8th, Fiesta Island

A casual Jeep-focused beach picnic on Fiesta Island in Mission Bay continues a long-running SoCalXJ tradition that has been merged with NAXJA for years. The gathering takes place on the west shore near the shortcut from the east side, where there is plenty of flat, hardpacked sand for parking. Space will not be reserved in advance, so arriving earlier can help secure a spot since the area is popular. Attendees can bring their rigs or come in any vehicle. Plan to bring your own food and beverages, and feel free to bring something to share. Pack chairs, shade, hats, sunscreen, beach and water toys, bikes, and firewood if staying after dark. Well behaved dogs are welcome, as Fiesta Island is off leash, and there is a dog park just south of the typical hangout area. Small boats and personal watercraft can be launched from the sand with a capable 4x4. The perimeter road is also suitable for biking, walking, running, and skating, and there is ample room to spread out for anyone who prefers extra distance. The SeaWorld drone show is visible from the area later in the evening. Please follow SDPD beach rules, including no glass and no alcohol.

Family & Beginners Sewing 102: Cutting, Pressing & Hemming

Build on beginner skills in the second class of the Family & Beginner Sewing series, focused on cutting, pressing, and hemming. Instructor Hannah Gioutlos guides students through sewing a drawstring backpack while covering how to position a pattern on fabric, cut with scissors or a rotary cutter, measure hem allowances with a seam gauge, and press pieces in place for clean hems. Early finishers can also stitch a simple pet bandana. Students should be able to thread and operate a sewing machine and feel comfortable with basic techniques. New machine users are asked to complete Family & Beginner Sewing 101 | Sewing Machine Basics before taking this session. Materials are provided, and you may bring your own fabric if you wish. Bring at least a half yard or two fat quarters of 100% cotton quilting or cotton canvas, as stretchy fabrics like cotton jersey are not part of this class. Bringing a personal sewing machine is ideal, and loaner machines are available. Personal machines must be fully functional. No prior sewing experience is required. Participants ages 12 and up are welcome. Children ages 7 and older may attend with an adult helper. If an adult is there only to assist a child, one space is needed; if both plan to sew their own projects, two spaces are required. Arrive on time to keep the session running smoothly, as arrivals more than 15 minutes late cannot be accommodated. This class is the 102 step in a sequence designed to build familiarity with sewing machines and foundational techniques. After this session, the next offering in the series is Family & Beginners Sewing 103 | Zippers, Linings & More. Discounts are available for military, first responders, and siblings. Scholarships are offered, and homeschool funds are accepted. If the class is full, an interest list is available for notifications about openings and future dates.

J Roddy Walston & The Automatic Band

J. Roddy Walston delivers a combustible performance fueled by cathartic rock and relentless drive. Anthemic tracks like Heavy Bells surge with grit, while deeper cuts such as Boys Can Never Tell shift into a more deliberate, cosmic groove. The music is built for movement and surrender, tapping into something instinctive rather than analytical. Hints of Kurt Cobain’s bite, Nilsson’s off-kilter sweetness, and Zeppelin’s weight collide with a quirky nod to William Onyeabor’s machine-like funk. Attempts to categorize him fall short because volatility is the point, and the live set hits hard. The songs carry enough muscle to balance the mayhem. Scream Diego 2026

Scream Diego returns as San Diego’s Halloween and horror convention with a full day of activities at the DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego - Mission Valley. This year’s theme is ZOMBIES ZOMBIES ZOMBIES, setting the tone for a showcase of panels, vendors, artists, entertainment, movies, a game room, and more. Attendees can browse a marketplace of horror, spooky, and oddity vendors, and explore original works from more than 20 artists. Performances inspired by all things eerie culminate with the return of the MONSTER PROM. Two panel rooms host conversations on topics such as diversity in horror, the state of the local scene, writing for the genre, and additional subjects. The independent horror film festival also returns, featuring shorts from local and regional filmmakers and aspiring directors. Families will find a dedicated kids zone with playful, spooky activities, and there is a costume contest for both children and adults with prizes that include tickets to other events like San Diego Anime Con. Children 8 and under are admitted free. Ticket options include an early ticket, a general admission ticket, a day-of general admission ticket, and a VIP option. The VIP pass adds extras such as an exclusive badge, a themed tote bag, preferred seating at panels and screenings where available, a T-shirt, a sticker three-pack, a signed poster, and a collectible trading card. Badge or complimentary pass reselling, sharing, or transfers are not permitted and may result in revocation without refund. Refunds are offered until the day before the event and are not available on or after the event, including for no-shows or dissatisfaction. The event maintains a zero tolerance policy for harassment, which includes verbal harassment, taking photos or video without explicit verbal consent, stalking, and nonconsensual physical contact. Violations can lead to removal without refund. Scream Diego is produced by Silk Road Productions, the team behind pop culture gatherings such as Fangaea Con, San Diego Anime Con, AnimeLand, AniPop, the San Diego Ramen Festival, and the Tortured Hearts Ball.
