The Merc hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration led by pianist, composer, arranger, and producer Irving Flores and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Trio, highlighting the depth, history, and innovation of Latin jazz. Over more than four decades, Irving Fernando Gomez Flores, born in Mexico and based in San Diego, has earned recognition as a leading voice in contemporary Latin jazz, collaborating with Poncho Sánchez, Airto Moreira, and members of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, while also contributing as a composer, arranger, and educator. His album Armando Mi Conga honors Afro-Cuban traditions with intricate rhythms, refined melodies, and improvisation, featuring Giovanni Hidalgo, Horacio Hernández, and Brian Lynch, and has been noted among standout Latin jazz recordings in recent years. For this intimate performance at The Merc, the trio features Flores on piano, Fernando Gomez on drums, and Julian Esparza on upright bass. The set explores the vibrant conversation between Afro-Cuban rhythm and jazz improvisation, weaving together original works, selections from Armando Mi Conga, and new pieces that reflect Flores’s ongoing creative path. Both rimfire and centerfire rifles are permitted. The program also shares the story of the day the Revolutionary War began, highlighting how careful marksmanship influenced events. These history segments are presented without modern politics, partisanship, ideology, or commentary and are designed to be accessible to everyone. Range fees are 20 dollars per day, participants 17 and younger attend free, and fees are waived for members of L.E. Duncan's Rainbow Shooting Club.
