Silent film excerpts from the Prelinger Archives in San Francisco are paired with a soundtrack of field recordings and electronic music composed by the artist, reframing deserts and canyons of the Southwest as otherworldly while questioning limited historical narratives and the colonial gaze behind the original images. A longtime pillar of San Francisco’s Latin jazz community for roughly five decades, Calloway has led his own groups, collaborated with John Santos, and directed the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco. Launched in 2022, the Afro-Filipino Jazz Project is a collaborative space where Afro Filipinx, African American, and Filipino American musicians explore a wide spectrum of styles with a focus on jazz traditions, African American musical roots, and traditional and folkloric Filipino sounds. It is part of the broader Afro-Filipino Project, which highlights the creative practices and artists of African American and Filipino American communities that have significantly shaped the nation’s arts. It starts with a Queer ASL meetup that invites all ages and a range of signing experience, then continues at an arcade bar for a relaxed night out centered on queer Deaf folks and signing allies. The later gathering is intended for conversational signers, with advanced learners, fluent CODAs, and interpreters welcome, and it is not designed for beginning hearing ASL 1 or 2 students. Deaf Queer community members co-host. The group may move on to other bars or wrap up early depending on energy, so the spot can change as the night goes on. The arcade bar serves food and drinks, including some vegetarian and vegan options and a few gluten free items, though the kitchen is not dedicated gluten free. Entry is step free and two bathrooms are labeled accessible, but reaching them can be difficult when arcade games and players narrow the path.
