    Black Violin

The Florida Theatre, 128 E Forsyth St, Jacksonville · verified Oct 9
    See details

Black Violin treats jazz, hip hop, funk, and classical as raw materials to be mixed into something new. After high school, Wilner Baptiste, known as Wil B, and Kevin Sylvester, known as Kev Marcus, each earned full music scholarships, to Florida State University and Florida International University respectively. Performing alongside their DJ, the two classically trained violinists weave a wide range of influences into a signature sound that sits between classical finesse and the spirit of the emcee, pushing the violin into fresh territory. Braxton Cook, an American alto saxophonist and singer-songwriter, has toured with Christian Scott, Christian McBride, and Marquis Hill and has performed with Jon Batiste, Mac Miller, and Rihanna. His album Not Everyone Can Go blends jazz and R&B and evokes the glow of evening as the heat of the day fades. It does not settle into Quiet Storm, instead it moves through the margins. Across albums such as Somewhere In Between, No Doubt, and Who Are You When No One Is Watching? he continues to blur genre lines, making music that resists easy labels, a quality that is central to its appeal.

Mandarin Museum & Historical Society presents an installment of its Fall 2026 Third Thursday Lecture Series featuring a book launch with author and storyteller Tim Gilmore. The program centers on his new release, "Memphis Wood and the Sanctified Fecund," and includes a reading and conversation with the author. Refreshments will be available, and the museum galleries will be open. Admission is free. Copies of the book will be for sale, with signing opportunities before and after the presentation. The book explores the life and impact of Memphis Wood, a seminal North Florida artist whose practice evolved from Abstract Expressionism and the Studio Craft Movement into lyrical work in fiber. Born in Dacula, Georgia in 1902, she later moved to Jacksonville and became one of the first public school art teachers in Duval County. Her exhibitions spanned from Florida to New York, and she collaborated with potter Charlie Brown and architect Robert Broward. Notable works include a 22-foot piece in Broward’s Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville, the Belshazzar’s Feast series, and Night Bloom, which inspired a chamber quartet by composer Stella Sung. Drawing on dozens of interviews and hundreds of published accounts, this volume is Gilmore’s 26th book and offers a portrait of an influential and enigmatic figure in the region’s art history. This event is made possible with sponsorship from Endless Summer Roofing Co. and support in part from the Merit-Based Cultural Service Grant Program, administered by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville with funding from the City of Jacksonville and elected officials.

Jacksonville Public Library, 303 N Laura St, Jacksonville · verified Oct 9
    See details

Step inside the Ann & David Hicks Auditorium at Jacksonville Public Library for an immersive courtroom drama where the audience serves as the jury. Hear witness testimonies, examine evidence, and cast votes at pivotal moments that shape how the trial progresses. The final decision rests with the room, so each performance can unfold differently. The case follows a summer night on a family speedboat steered by the son of an influential politician, with an ex-partner and longtime friends aboard. By the end of the outing, one passenger is dead, another is in a coma, and the driver stands accused of murder. Jurors weigh whether jealousy sparked the tragedy or if there is a deeper story to uncover. This fast-paced experience runs about 60 minutes. Doors open 30 minutes before the start, and there is no late entry. Seating is first come, first served within the zone you select, with Zones A, B, and C offering different viewing areas. It is recommended for ages 12 and up, and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no strobe effects. Sensitive content includes domestic violence, emotional manipulation, alcohol use, and a disturbing emergency call recording. The venue is fully accessible, including a wheelchair zone, and service animals are welcome. Restrooms are available, the space is climate controlled, and outside food or beverages are not permitted. Smoking and vaping are not allowed. There is no onsite parking. Street options and nearby garages are available, and rideshare is suggested. Group reservations are available for parties of 30 or more, as well as private performances. See details

Floyd Nation brings The Inner Light Tour to The Florida Theatre with a powerful, all-encompassing concert shaped by the Pink Floyd legacy that influenced a generation. Classics such as Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Time, and Another Brick in the Wall are featured, delivering the sound, feeling, and atmosphere audiences anticipate while reaching far beyond a typical tribute. Their new album, Inner Light, recorded in part at Abbey Road Studios, fuels the concept for this tour. The performance blends the group’s original pieces with Pink Floyd’s most renowned songs into a flowing set that feels familiar yet new. Rather than reproducing every note, the band focuses on the spirit of the music, giving it room to grow in real time. Extended sections, fluid transitions, and mindful improvisation bring a sense of discovery throughout the show. An immersive production heightens the journey. Layered lighting, atmospheric projections, and cinema-inspired staging reshape the space into a living environment that draws the audience into the heart of the music. The result is a performance paced with intention, offering the staples listeners expect, revealing lesser-known selections for devoted fans, and introducing new material that broadens the story, all delivered by accomplished musicians dedicated to both authenticity and innovation.
