July Kayaking Skills Practice

A full day of on-water learning awaits at Virginia Key Beach North Point Park, where a free kayak skills practice in the sheltered waters of Lamar Lake, also known as Jimbo’s Lagoon, will focus on safety, confidence, and technique. Sponsored by South Florida Paddlers and supported by ACA-certified instructors, this inclusive session welcomes paddlers of every experience level in sea kayaks, sit-on-tops, inflatables, and recreational kayaks equipped with bulkheads and flotation. The program centers on rescue practice with demonstrations and hands-on work, including wet exits, T-rescues with multiple re-entry options, scoop rescues, cowboy or cowgirl scramble self rescues with and without a paddle float, paddle-float assisted approaches such as the heel hook, conventional method, and the witch’s broom, plus the Hand of God rescue. Instruction also covers the updated personal flotation device classification system and how it corresponds to the former Coast Guard types, as well as proper tow belt use and strategies for returning a swimmer to their boat. Participants are encouraged to focus on skills they most want to refine, and instructors will make every effort to assist. Bring your own kayak and gear, since boats are not provided. If you plan to work on paddle-float rescues, bring a paddle float, though a limited number will be available to borrow. Come prepared with sun protection, bug spray, plenty of water, and snacks or a light lunch. A properly fitted PFD must be worn on the water, fully fastened, along with a signaling device such as a whistle. Please treat wildlife in and around the lagoon with care and respect. Restrooms and outdoor showers at the PADL, Inc. concession will be available for use, and parking is in the lots on either side of the PADL, Inc. complex. Entry to the park carries an $8 fee, while the session itself is free as a public service to the paddling community. The event is insured through the American Canoe Association with support from the Florida Paddling Trails Association, and an ACA waiver will be provided on site for participants to sign. Each person is responsible for their own safety, and kayaking carries inherent risks.

Big Feelings (Reactivity) Group Dog Training Class

Big Feelings is a small-group training class created for dogs that struggle with reactivity and sensitivity. It is a good fit for dogs that bark or lunge on leash, become overstimulated by dogs, people, bikes, or movement, have trouble staying calm in public places, or shut down, freeze, or panic outside. This is not a free-for-all social session. Group size is intentionally limited so each dog can work safely, stay under threshold, and build confidence at a comfortable pace. Instruction focuses on improving leash handling, recognizing a dog’s threshold before reactions escalate, using practical coping strategies for reactivity, building engagement and focus around triggers, and developing real-world handling skills that translate to everyday walks. The goal is to help dogs and their handlers feel calmer, safer, and more confident together. The cost is $75 per dog. Proof of up-to-date rabies vaccination is required. Dogs remain leashed at all times and will be carefully spaced for safety and success. Capacity is very limited due to the hands-on format.
