DRV Gallery presents Abstract Explorations with Amy Howell
This monthly abstract painting class builds creative confidence and technique from session to session. The series begins with intuitive mark making, gesture, and movement through guided prompts, then moves into color theory to craft expressive palettes and create a painting inspired by a single emotion or memory. Students explore texture and dimension with acrylic mediums, gels, and impasto, working with palette knives and varied tools to layer, scrape, and build tactile surfaces. Nature serves as a springboard for simplifying organic forms into rhythm, shape, and color, and music becomes a catalyst for dynamic compositions that emphasize tempo and flow, including one larger energetic piece. Additional sessions cover minimalism with a focus on negative space and balance, abstracted landscapes that evoke horizon and atmosphere, collage and mixed media for depth and narrative, the use of contrast to drive visual energy, and layered processes such as transparency and glazing to add complexity and mystery. The year concludes with time to refine ongoing work or assemble a small cohesive series, a relaxed group share, and a group exhibition at DRV Gallery. One month is reserved as a break for reflection and fresh inspiration. Participants bring their own paints, palette knives, surfaces, and tools. Pricing is $160 for four classes, or $45 for a single session.
