Competition divisions include Adult for riders 18 and over and Youth for riders 17 and under, with no cross entry into Walk/Trot or Novice classes for those groups. From Memory to Sinema is a hands-on workshop led by artist-in-residence Al'Ikens Plancher. It opens with a two minute excerpt from his Boat People proof of concept that demonstrates how lived experience can be translated into cinematic language. Participants then distill a vivid personal memory into one or two sentences. Using pencils, index cards, and colored markers, each person sketches three images that mark a beginning, a middle, and an end to map the memory’s arc, followed by a group conversation on how framing, scale, and negative space influence emotional tone. In the second hour, participants refine their panels, add single line captions to suggest dialogue or sound, and place their cards on a communal Story Wall so individual narratives can speak to one another. The final hour features a guided walk-through of the wall, with each storyteller narrating their sequence and receiving feedback on clarity, pacing, and sensory detail. Everyone leaves with a concise visual blueprint that can seed a short film, a graphic narrative, or a written vignette, highlighting shared themes of place, identity, and transformation. Partial scholarships are available by request. Ages 16 and up. “Sinema” reflects the Haitian Creole spelling of cinema and is Al'Ikens Plancher’s artistic brand. This programming is supported in part by Creative West and the National Endowment for the Arts. Al'Ikens Plancher is a writer-director from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, who began high school at 12 and college at 16, choosing filmmaking over a possible diplomatic career to represent his country through art. His work spans television and film, including The Chi and Yellowstone, and award-winning shorts such as Remnants, Konpa, and Boat People, which was Oscar qualified. He has spoken at the University of California, Irvine, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, and the Latin American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh. His work has been supported by Tribeca Studios, the SFFILM Rainin Grant, Ragdale, NALIP, the Wolfsonian, Oolite Arts, Third Horizon, and Surel's Place, and he is a Creative Capital Awards Finalist. His interests also include spirituality, relationships, and food.
