    Chris Smither

The Riverside Hotel, 2900 W Chinden Blvd, Garden City · verified Sep 13
    See details

Chris Smither, praised by the Associated Press, brings a lifetime in song shaped by New Orleans roots and a deep love of the blues. Born in Miami during World War II and raised in New Orleans, he learned his first chords on his mother’s ukulele with help from his Uncle Howard, then chased the sound of Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt. In his twenties he left anthropology studies for Boston at the urging of Eric von Schmidt, forging friendships with fellow artists including Bonnie Raitt, who later recorded “Love You Like a Man” and “I Feel the Same.” His performances are defined by propulsive fingerpicking layered over the backbeat of his tapping feet, with the footwork mic'd when he performs. Across decades of songwriting and touring, Smither’s catalog spans early 1970s releases, a celebrated return to recording and the road, live albums captured without overdubs, collaborations with producers like Stephen Bruton and David Goodrich, songs placed in films, and bills shared with artists such as B.B. King, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Recent highlights include Call Me Lucky in 2018 and More From The Levee in 2020. His 20th release, All About the Bones, features eight new originals alongside his versions of Eliza Gilkyson’s “Calm Before the Storm” and Tom Petty’s “Time to Move On,” with contributions from David Goodrich, Zak Trojano, BettySoo, and jazz saxophonist Chris Cheek, recorded at Sonelab Studios in Massachusetts. The Sapphire Room offers a full dinner and bar menu. The venue welcomes all ages and is family friendly. A ticket is required for every guest, and babies held in arms are not permitted.

    Futures Begin Here Luncheon

The Riverside Hotel - Boise, Garden City
    Free

This one hour luncheon at The Riverside Hotel offers a complimentary meal and features real experiences shared by local families, illustrating how early support can transform childhood outcomes. The program highlights what a united community can accomplish for its youngest members and outlines ways to get involved through volunteering, donations, or student enrollment. Giraffe Laugh Early Learning Centers, a nonprofit serving Idaho since 1989, strives to ensure a family’s income does not define a child’s future by expanding access to early learning and care for infants through preschoolers, along with tuition assistance, on site food pantries, and resources for parents. Safe, nurturing classrooms and healthy meals not only prepare children for kindergarten, they help create lasting change for families.
