Explore West African drumming in a welcoming class led by M. Taylor, Senior Instructor with the Tam Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy. Participants build solid hand technique and timing while learning traditional djembe rhythms on the West African hand drum. A djembe specialist since 1994, Taylor shares the heritage behind each rhythm through oral histories that cover purpose, originating ethnic groups, and geographic roots, with maps used to support the discussions. Instruction also includes dunun, the cylindrical bass drums, and those instruments are provided. Djembes are available to rent if needed for $5 per day, paid directly to Taylor. No previous experience is required. Tuition is $20 per class, cash is preferred, and pricing can be flexible for those facing financial hardship or for families with youth over 7. No preregistration is required, and instrument rentals should be requested at least a day in advance.
