Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, with text by Alessandro Striggio the Younger, arrives in a new, fully staged co-production with The Newberry Consort at Jarvis Opera Hall in the Holtschneider Performance Center at DePaul University. This landmark early opera tells the tale of the musician Orpheus, whose singing sways mortals and gods alike. After Eurydice’s sudden death, he ventures into the Underworld to bring her back, only to lose her again when doubt overcomes him. The story closes with Apollo lifting Orpheus to the heavens, uniting music and myth in a poignant finale. The performance runs approximately two and a half hours with one 20-minute intermission. It is sung in the original Italian with projected English titles. A post-opera conversation with members of the team follows most performances, offering a chance to explore the music, staging choices, and the making of the production. On opening night, a celebratory toast for ticket holders takes place immediately after the curtain call, and the talkback is not held. Tenor Zachary Wilder makes his Haymarket debut in the title role. The cast also features Geoffrey Agpalo, Ryan Belongie, Hannah De Priest, Kaitlin Foley, Emily Fons, David Govertsen, Patrick Kilbride, Lindsay Metzger, Leo Radosavljevic, Erica Schuller, and Michael St. Peter. Drummer and lead vocalist Denise Parent hails from Woodstock and performs with The Deadbeats in New York’s Hudson Valley and Capital Region, with past collaborations that include Steve Kimock, Vassar Clements, Buddy Cage, Jeff Mattson, Rob Barraco, and David Gans. She also fronts Rock City Junction, showcasing her own songs. Lead vocalist Jill Paone Simmons brings a background that ranges from Broadway to blues and found a lasting home in the Dead scene with Pittsburgh’s theCAUSE. Her interpretations nod to the originals while adding her own color, from a delicate Birdsong to a fiery Hard to Handle and a deeply felt Sugaree. Sharing the bill, Bella Rayne Band channels high-energy, guitar-forward rock with a jam-friendly spirit. Bella Rayne is a self-taught guitarist, singer, and songwriter who began by reviving an old Stratocaster and learning by ear. Her group blends Southern rock, modern Americana, and open-ended jams, weaving in bold reimaginations of Grateful Dead favorites alongside originals. The band’s quick rise has taken them from intimate clubs to national stages and festival bills, with a sound often compared to a next-wave take on Tedeschi Trucks Band, colored by an alternative edge and a 70s vibe.
