AIFF 2026 Opening Night: 'A Life Illuminated'

Opening Night of the sixth annual AfterImage Film Festival at Charlestowne Cinema spotlights A Life Illuminated from filmmaker Tasha Van Zandt. After the screening, Van Zandt will be present for a Q&A with the audience. A Life Illuminated descends into the deepest ocean to reveal bioluminescent creatures that had never been filmed before. The documentary follows renowned marine biologist Dr. Edie Widder and her colleagues on expeditions to capture these living lights, drawing on her pioneering achievement of recording the giant squid on video. It also offers a portrait of Widder’s determination in a realm long shaped by superstitions about women aboard ships as she pursues ambitious scientific goals. All tickets are $50.

Memoriam Development presents a spring-themed installment of Nightshade featuring ten short horror plays by writers from around the world. The lineup includes Artificial Intimacy by Melissa Harrison, Brood Song by Brad White, Dark Druids and Their Dark Jars by Jonathan Josephson, Flower Moon by Rebecca Kane, Greenhouse by Colin Commager, Growing Pains by Leland Culver, Rootsong by Robert Csoma, This is Our Spring by Dana Hall, The Violinist Sucks You Dry by Annie Schoonover, and The Witches Chair by Abbey Goscinski. Performances take place in the Backspace at Side Street Studio Arts and are directed by Nick Mataragas with assistance from Rebecca Rivers. The cast features Emma Archbold, Jamie Berry, Jacob Borre, Ken Craig, Amanda Davila, Samantha Hoyt, and Carissa Lehning. Admission follows a pay-what-you-can approach with a suggested contribution of $25, and every amount helps sustain the space and the work created there. This presentation is supported by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.

Elgin Theatre Company presents Fade, a play exploring the evolving relationship between Lucia, a Mexican-born novelist new to television writing in Los Angeles, and Abel, a U.S.-born Mexican who works as a custodian. Lucia, facing misogyny and racism, finds a connection with Abel as they navigate assumptions, trust, and personal histories. The performances will be held on select dates in April and May. 6th Annual Autism Acceptance Celebration

Now in its sixth year, this Autism Acceptance Celebration is hosted by the Autism Hero Project at the Elgin Police Department, with MWG taking part in the festivities.

Magic Dave at 6th Annual Autism Acceptance & Child Abuse Prevention Celebration

Magic Dave brings a pair of spellbinding shows to a community gathering dedicated to autism acceptance and child abuse prevention at the Elgin Police Station. Presented in collaboration with the Elgin Police Department, the celebration fills the building and extends across a few blocks outside with family-friendly activities, resources, and entertainment. More than 50 community partners and resource vendors will be onsite alongside food trucks. Highlights include Glowby the Bubbler surrounding the area with thousands of bubbles, a 24 by 24 foot petting zoo with about 20 to 25 animals such as goats, sheep, a small cow, a donkey, a llama, rabbits, and chickens, and free screenings of the #HeroesUnite documentary The Need for First Responders that spotlights the importance of autism training. A mobile gaming truck supports up to 16 players at once, and there is face painting, a moonwalk, and ATV rides. The 501st Midwest Garrison appears in Star Wars attire, and free popcorn and ice cream are available. Family Finder sign-ups are offered on site, and free traffic stop assimilation scenarios for autistic individuals and their families are available with sign-ups. Additional activities will be shared as the celebration approaches.

At Moonlight Theatre, Joe Cantafio and JADE 50's team up with Elvis tribute artist Rick Saucedo for a concert celebrating the sounds of the 1950s. JADE 50's was chosen by Dick Clark to perform on Dick Clark's Good Ol' Rock & Roll Show, and through the years the group has shared the stage with legends that include Chuck Berry, Del Shannon, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Drifters, and the Coasters. Saucedo channels Elvis across eras, from the early hits to the spectacle of the Las Vegas years. A highlight comes when he joins JADE 50's on stage for favorites from the 1950s and early 1960s.

PROG ROCK NITE! PAVLOV’S DOG with SPECIAL GUEST THE CYBERIAM

An evening of progressive rock spotlights Pavlov’s Dog with special guest The Cyberiam. Pavlov’s Dog formed in 1973 as a quartet of David, bassist Rick Stockton, violinist Siegfried Carver, and drummer Mike Safron, and soon signed to ABC Records for $500,000. Their debut album, Pampered Menial, drew attention for distinctive songs and vocals, and pieces such as Julia, Late November, and Of Once & Future Kings have remained concert favorites over the years. The band went on to appear alongside ELO, Aerosmith, Kraftwerk, Nektar, and Blue Oyster Cult, while groups like Heart, Thin Lizzy, Bob Seger, and Journey opened their shows. The Cyberiam features Chicago musicians who launched the project in 2018 with a self-titled debut and developed dynamic live performances with striking visuals. Festival appearances include Progtoberfest, ProgStock, Marillion Couch Convention, Marillion Weekend Montreal, and ProgPower USA. In 2022 and 2023, Keith and Brian performed as a duo opening for Riverside and The Pineapple Thief. The lineup features Keith Semple on vocals and guitars with additional sound effects, Brian Kovacs on vocals and bass with additional sound effects, Frank Lucas on keyboards and vocals, and Tommy Murray on drums and vocals.

Cal's Angels brings the community together at Pollyanna Brewing Company for a Just Shave It event where supporters shave or cut their hair to spark conversation and raise awareness for pediatric cancer. The effort honors local fighters, survivors, and angels. Watching the shaves and haircuts does not require tickets. Pedal under the full moon on a social night ride that meets at Elgin Community Bikes and explores the core neighborhoods of Elgin at a moderate pace. The route covers about 7 to 9 miles and typically takes 60 to 70 minutes. If you need air or small adjustments, arrive a bit early, as equipment for quick fixes will be available beforehand. For night riding, Illinois law requires a white front light and a red rear reflector or red light, so make sure you are easy to see. Riders who have not completed the 2026 annual ride waiver are asked to do so in advance.

This free bicycling session focuses on safe, confident riding for all ages, with activities suitable for children 3 and up. Participants will learn practical safety tips, review traffic rules and group riding etiquette, and pick up educational materials to take home. A relaxed group ride will follow along the park loop and finish at the playground. Please bring a water bottle. Helmets are required, and participants 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Food and beverages from local businesses are available on site, and parking is complimentary. Admission is $7 per person, with free entry for children 12 and under. Payment is collected at the gate and is cash only. Single admissions are not offered in advance online or by phone, and ATMs are available on the grounds. ROCK ‘N RAVIOLI: Lunch & Magic Show with Mike DiDomenico

Enjoy a kid-focused lunch paired with an interactive magic show starring Chicago-based magician Mike DiDomenico, a veteran performer with more than 30 years of experience blending classic, award-winning tricks with a modern style. Before the main act, he stops by each table for close-up wonders that happen right in children’s hands, with cards appearing and coins vanishing. The stage show follows with bright visual illusions, playful comedy, and plenty of audience participation, giving young guests chances to help and step into the spotlight. Every child receives a simple magic trick to take home so the fun continues after the meal. Lunch features mini cheeseburgers, chicken strips, veggies with ranch, and mini hot dogs. May 2026 Kane County Flea Market

The Kane County Flea Market features a honey and beeswax vendor whose regular location is booth 4 inside the South Trades Building, with any changes to that spot shared on Facebook. Visitors can find liquid honey, comb honey, honey candy, honey straws, beeswax bars, soap, lotion, lip balm, and more. Admission is $7, and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. The vendor is not an event organizer, and any discussion posts claiming to accept booth registrations are scams.

Fox Valley Hootenanny

Part jam, part show, and part singalong, this music gathering is designed to support a local nonprofit theater. In the main theater, host Tim Swann leads a flowing set as local musicians step in, add layers, and shape songs on the spot, with classic favorites inviting audience singalongs alongside newer tunes. A smaller theater offers a more intimate setting with singer songwriter spotlights, featuring solo and duet performances. Food and drinks are available for purchase, including Detroit-style pizza from Squares. If the weather cooperates, some of the music may move outside. Proceeds benefit Marquee Youth Stage. There is no extra charge for the musical entertainment. Rat Pack‑age specials are priced at $28.95, with a $15.95 option for children 11 and under. The O’l Blue Eyes includes a salad dressed with Italian red wine vinegar, garlic bread, house cheese ravioli, Sunday pork sauce with a meatless option, plus Ron’s signature meatballs and Taylor Street sausage with peppers. Healing Paws Evaluation

Discover whether your pet is a fit for the Healing Paws Comfort Animal Program with a scheduled evaluation at PetSuites St. Charles. Anderson Humane’s volunteer teams visit senior centers, schools, and other locations where the calming presence of animals helps people, and participants commit at least two hours each month. Evaluations are by appointment, last 20 minutes, and include a $50 fee. Dogs evaluated at PetSuites must be current on rabies, DHPP, bordetella, and canine influenza (H3N2/H3N8). If a dog is not yet vaccinated for canine influenza, a single 30-day waiver is available per client. Electronic vaccination records are required before the session, must be submitted at least two weeks prior, and will be shared with PetSuites. For more information, contact Kelly Rakunas. Fans of Gilmore Girls will recognize Scott Patterson as Luke Danes, but onstage he highlights a lifelong passion for music as a self-taught guitarist and songwriter who began performing at nine with his first band, The Unknowns. Career milestones include flood relief benefit shows in Summersville, West Virginia and Ocean City, New Jersey in 2016, a performance on Rachel Ray’s SXSW stage in Austin in March 2017, a summer run that year of 27 sold out acoustic dates on both coasts, and a 2019 appearance with his band at amFAR’s LifeRide 10 Celebration in Los Angeles in support of HIV and AIDS research. His releases range from the EP Revolution to the singles Surrender, I Want to Kiss You More, and Cellphone, along with earlier tracks Haha Song and Forgotten Hero, both of which debuted at number one on the iTunes Indie Top 100, with Haha Song holding the top spot for several weeks. Participants will search for returning breeding birds along with migrants heading north, with opportunities to observe sparrows, flycatchers, thrushes, woodpeckers, and warblers. The outing welcomes beginners and is open to ages 16 and up. Admission is free, and advance registration is required.

Rallye School

Learn how to Rallye or refresh your skills for the upcoming season at Euroquipe. The school features a classroom session to cover fundamentals and best practices, with light snacks and beverages provided. Registration and check in take place before the classroom session, which begins promptly. Following class, a short practice Rallye gives attendees an opportunity to apply what they learned on the road. The route concludes at Old Towne Pub & Eatery, where results are announced, questions are addressed, and experiences are shared. Rallye teams consist of a licensed driver over 18 and a navigator over 16. Both participants must pre-register, though only the driver pays the registration fee. Individuals may register as drivers and attend the school, but the practice Rallye requires a two-person team. There may be opportunities to partner with another registered participant at the school, although this cannot be guaranteed. PCA Chicago uses the Richta Competitor app, which provides real-time tracking and instant checkpoint feedback for teams. To prepare in advance, participants can review the Rallye General Instructions and the Rallye Classes and Competitive Points materials on the PCA Chicago Region website.

Spring Fling Bicycle Show & Ride

Kick off the riding season at Sammy’s Bikes in downtown St. Charles with a vintage-focused show and tell followed by a group cruise. Attendees can display favorite bicycles, talk gear with fellow enthusiasts, and enjoy bicycle-themed games. A raffle will benefit CASA Kane County. The first 15 people who register a bike receive a free swag bag. Show entries cost $10 per bike or $20 total for two or more, with no limit on how many you can enter. This is not a judged competition and there are no trophies, it is simply a chance to share your pride and joy. Public admission is free. The day includes a no drop vintage bike cruise to the St. Charles Vintage Motorcycle and Bicycle Museum, where bikes can be parked and guests can explore the collection with free entry. Crank up the pace with a quicker, longer daytime outing inspired by the group’s full moon ride. This ride is geared toward experienced cyclists, covers about 15 to 20 miles, and follows a set route to a nearby destination, possibly toward Pingree Grove, Algonquin, or St. Charles. Expect extra sunshine, more mileage, and maybe even an ice cream stop. If you are curious about the name, ask ride coordinator Tim King when you see him. An ECB waiver for 2026 is required and is completed once for the year.

LITTLE FEAT: THE LAST FAREWELL TOUR

Little Feat marks a career spanning more than five decades with a farewell tour that highlights a deep songbook, including “Dixie Chicken,” “Oh, Atlanta,” “Willin’,” and “Fat Man in the Bathtub.” The group’s blend of rock, New Orleans swamp boogie, jazz, and blues anchors the set, reflecting a history that began when Frank Zappa encouraged Lowell George to start a band. George teamed with Bill Payne and Richie Hayward, later joined by Kenny Gradney, Sam Clayton, Paul Barrere, and Fred Tackett, and the era produced the acclaimed live album Waiting for Columbus. The journey has included the losses of Lowell George in 1979, Richie Hayward in 2010, and Paul Barrere in 2019. Scott Sharrard and Tony Leone are now part of the lineup, and the band recently released a new album of original songs titled Strike Up the Band. This run honors a long legacy while easing the pace for a road-tested outfit whose name was inspired by George’s small shoe size.

5th Annual STC Baseball Strike Out Cancer Tournament ⚾️🎗

STC Baseball presents its fifth annual tournament dedicated to striking out pediatric cancer, bringing multiple days of youth baseball to East Side Sports Complex. Divisions include 10u, 11u, 12u, 13u, and 14u. Registration is open to Single A and Double A teams. Proceeds support Cal's Angels, a 501(c)(3) organization that grants wishes, raises awareness, and funds research for children fighting cancer.

Presented at Bartlett High School, it celebrates Bartlett’s sister-city connection with Miaoli City, Taiwan, through a lively cultural showcase. Support from the Formosa Melody Music Center, Arts in Bartlett, and the Village of Bartlett makes this performance possible. The Formosa Melody Music Center is a well known Taiwanese performing arts group that has twice been selected by the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) to tour the Americas on behalf of Taiwan.

ART CLASH 2026!

Art Clash returns in 2026 with the Fox Valley’s biggest live painting competition. This edition embraces the theme Verdant, featuring multiple rounds where the crowd selects two favorite paintings from each clash and eight artists ultimately move on to the City Final. A refreshed format changes how painters advance. After each preliminary round, a portion of the field is eliminated based on audience votes, with the number tied to how many artists are competing. The second round cuts rely on combined votes from both preliminary rounds. In the final, earlier points are cleared and any remaining painter can take the win. Cash prizes are on the line. Side Street Studio Arts provides and requires the use of paint, canvases, cleaning supplies, and easels. Additional mark-making tools such as markers are permitted only if supplied by Side Street and may be requested in advance, though availability is not guaranteed since the focus remains on painting. Artists may bring their own brushes, but no other special equipment, tools, or supplies. The program follows a Pay What You Can model. An $18 contribution reflects the true cost, yet contributions above or below that amount are welcome based on individual circumstances, and every gift helps sustain the space and the work happening there. A social night ride under the full moon explores the core neighborhoods of Elgin at a moderate pace. The route covers about 7 to 9 miles. The meeting location is Elgin Community Bikes, and basic support for air and minor adjustments will be available beforehand. For night riding, Illinois law requires a clear white light on the front and a red reflector or red light on the back. Riders who have not completed the 2026 annual ride waiver are asked to do so in advance.
